My First Car in UK - Peugeot 206

I went on a drive to peak district today - on my way back I noticed the "STOP" light on the odometer blinking and the temperature gauge was on full heat. The engine was making a strange sound too- as if the radiators fan was hitting against something.

It was not related to the acceleration in any way and disappeared on its own in a minute after stopping the car. The radiator coolant fluid is full and the engine wasn't steaming hot either.

I will call the insurance company on Monday and find out what to do - the insurance policy includes break down cover

congrats! thanks for updating on everything, very usefull for those who want to come to uk in near future and want a daily runabout. btw i have to ask why a peugeot, why not a ford focus or mondeo roughly the same cost and class of car, or a citroen which are more quirky inside than a peugeot. i understand that peugeots are frowned upon these days in uk whereas fords are cool?

but regardless its looks really clean and intresting inside especially compared to our local supposedly brand new hatch backs and certainly more strong and bigger car than the tiny jdms here so a wise choice.

btw you didn't mention about MOT, did it have a valid MOT and for howlong? whats the procedure to renew a MOT once it expires and does insurance cost matter if the car has a MOT or not?

maybe its a knackered water pump or a oring causing the system to loose pressure maybe, as its a old car and only then little miles in a hands of a elderly driver so ill be concerned about the rubber bits and the fact that engine has probably been lugged arround for most of its life. check for oil or coolant mixing.

i doubt insurance company would do much other than to direct you to a workshop and do check in advance if labour charges of repair are covered or not if they are.

i would also suggest you join a UK peugeot owners forum that way youll have expert knowledge on your particular car as well as all the cheap and good places to get it serviced and to get parts from.

Haha, very true. I was a bit disappointed when I heard my uncle had shortlisted this car. But he could not find any low mileage auto. Had I opted for a manual, I would have got better options.

But the drive is great- despite it being considered a buzurg car

Yes its MOT was done this year in March and the next one is due in march, 2016

did you notice any other light appear along with the stop sign
no point calling the insurance company as it only covers you for accident fire or theft yes the breakdown cover does come in handy if you ever breakdown on the roadside they will come in and rescue you and get you to your home or your garage if they can not get your car temporarily fixed to get you going. mind you it's only temporary fix the breakdown, you have to have a garage do the mechanical work insurance companies never get involved in that side of things.
there is a new product being offered called the warranty cover which covers mechanicals but most of the time even they try and wiggle out of situations by implying it's a general wear item and does not come under mechanical failure.
so you would be still paying for your services, brakes pads, tyres etc even after paying for all the above mentioned products because they all fall under general wear and tear along with your mot's etc.

Congratulations on the car, but it sounds like it needs to be seen by a good mechanic first of all. Did you get it checked out by AA before buying it?

Never saw A/C in a ukdm car before. I always thought that ukdm car's don't have A/C because they don't need it due to the cool weather. This is the first time I saw A/C in a ukdm car. My misperception got clarified........

yes true - I am going to a local garage tomorrow which is well reputed. I had to book an appointment for that

It was test driven and that's the only check which was done. The AA quoted a price of 190 pounds to inspect the car so I did not get it done

haha , most UKDM cars have air conditioning now. Its quite warm when its sunny in summer
