Tested one. They both carry the same processor as in the sensor is the same but D7000 carries more focus points, built-in auto focus in the body, a much more convenient data screen on top right, more cross points, more storage slots 2vs1 and also a better battery along with Nikon lighting system technology and much more. It won't be significantly better but is a bit better and worth of an upgrade if you don't plan to go FULL professional. I don't know about weights but D7000 would be heavier for its bigger battery and more internal components and bigger size.

If u want to carry a dslr for normal pictures KEEP D5100
If u want to go semi pro or just as a hobbyist and willing to step up than GET D7000 or D7100 if its in ur budget
Otherwise for a FULL PRO, I would suggest to step up the game to a full frame like a D600.

d600 is a sooper dooper thing bro but costs hell lot so i would be buying it after like 3 yrs atleast so iam thinking to upgrade to d7000.

yeah night performance on the D7000 is slight better than D5100. Means u need lesser ISO compensation and lesser grain. Sharpness would almost be the same since it's more about the lens. Color and brightness is a tad better but only noticeable when you go in minute details. The D7000 night performance will outshine D5100 when you go beyond ISO 3200.

Bro i have a 50mm 1.8g tamron 17-50mm 2.8 non vc and kit lens,i was thinking of getting sigma 70-300 in trade of my kit lens but now i think that i should upgrade to d7000 as i was a bit unhappy with the performance of my d5100 at night without flash,i guess the view finder is brighter in d7000 that would also give it a plus point.

Best thing about D7000 for us (D5100 users) is the build-in autofocus motor. We won't have to get the expensive G lenses of Nikon and the older D version would work flawlessly on this body. Yep the G will work as well on it. Viewfinder is brighter which will allow u to focus better at night and have better visibility but that has nothing to do with the image quality.
Yes for night D7000 is slightly better but DONT expect marvels over D5100 since they carry the same sensor. Either go for D7100 or else stick to D5100 and use better settings..IMO

What kind of images and scene do you have trouble handling with D5100 at night with out flash?
let me know and may be I can be of help, since I have faced any issue but I found a turnaround for it

bro when i have an unnatural lightning as in functions at night iam unable to capture the image as i see from my naked eye,secondly shooting at night i.e no light just a landscape of an area or taking a random pic of sky it doesnt turns out to be exactly what iam looking at,i have seen people capturing the sky with a 18-55 and it turns out blue and all that details but thats missing i have spent hrs changing settings doing adjustment but fail v badly iam uploading my few tries.

To get your picture as close to the naked eye as possible, you need to do post-processing. It is very crucial. That blue also depends upon the weather. If you have seen my Lahore thread and pictures, the sky was the bluest I have EVER seen in my life. It was EXTREMELY sunny but I had to compensate for that razor sharp light to bring in the colors and the highlights in the picture, otherwise the pictures would have been horrible.
Try taking pictures at sunset and dawn..Extreme night picture come only bluish when you do long exposure shots

Night performance is upto the mark, they need post-processing. If you have taken the same pictures with the D7000 you wouldn't have notice ANY difference at all.

Email me the 1st and the 2nd picture. I'll post the results here to show their true potential

Photoshop is for editing. That won't be of much use. Stick to Lightroom. simple and amazing

yes the f/2.8 shows that it was Tamron. IMO I have noticed that the 18-105 has better picture optics and quality than this. This is my review, I'll have to use it to comment further...

So these are the images you sent. I uploaded via my flickr because it makes posting easy. Due credits are given

Image 1:

• The Noise on this image was too much because the ISO on this one was 5000 which is HUGE. NEVER go beyond 3200. Be creative with ur settings but never go beyond 3200. For me ISO 1000 would have been enough.
• Keep the aperture for landscape or such shots where the subject is not there or everything is the subject at around f8 to f9.
• sinch the grain was too much, post processing was not much fun.
• did a bit of white balance correction (not needed though)
• increased the clarity, did some changed in highlights to bring in the shades and decreased the shadow to show a bit color of the rust

• everything was fine abt it, the ISO, shutter
• shot needed to be done at f7 to f9 IMO
• improved colors in the sky by turning the white balance more towards bluish shade
• improved outlines in the tree by increasing clarity
