Need RWD Turbo Engine for my Project!

I have just doing my project:

Its a Datsun 120Y Coupe from 1974.

I need the drivetrain for it in good condition.. Does any one have a complete setup::: Complete Engine - 5-Speed Transmission (manual) - ECU - Harness - Turbo - Cam Angel Sensor - Alternator - Starter - A/C Compressor - Power Steering Pump - Intake Manifold - Exhaust Manifold - Throttle Body - Clutch - Fly Wheel - Pressure Plate

Need one of the following engines:

1) RB20DET

2) SR20DET

3) 1JZGTE

4) 3SGTE

Please let me know guys, I am located in Karachi. If otherwise could you direct me where to look for the engine, a dealer who imports them maybe?

3sgte is not a rwd engine. which transmission will you use with it?
what gear ratios are yu looking for?
how much weight distribution on front and rear wheels ratio is yr target?

you can find other engines in rwd config.

the bigger the engine in volume mass, other small things wont fit and hard to maintain,, for example if you need to work on compressor, you have to take out some stuff to get to it. , 120y engine bay is not too big. 1jzgte will get cramped in it.

you would also need to customize stronger links to hold to engine weight effectively.

are you planning to increase wheel base width on 120Y?

what is the motive to restore 120Y?. drag race car?. circuit use? or just street cruising?

the stuff yr looking for in karachi, you need to go into sharsha used parts market and hunt using yr expertise.

My first preference would be the RB20DET with the stock 5 speed manual gearbox from the R32 skyline. Gear ratio's are : 3.321-1.902-1.308-1.000-0.759

could you suggest some other RWD engines (stock turbo would be great)

You are correct about the larger engine not allowing other components such as AC etc not to fit in, therefore the RB or SR would be best, its quite compact compared to the 1JZ.

The Chassis and engine mounts would be re-done, not only to hold the weight effectively but also to improve the stiffness of the structure allowing for better handling. I'm quite an expert on Finite Element Analysis and would do the structural calculations keeping in mind the vibrational frequencies from the selected engine.

The wheel base of the car definitely needs to be extended (check out my other thread and sketched designs https://www.pakwheels.com/forums/d-i-y-projects/177497-project-datsun-120y-coupe-1974-a ) Will try to find an LSD but if not would use the 70's Mark 2 rear diff (its much wider), will flare the fenders and drop the height of the car as well.

The rear suspension is Leaf and would add another leaf or half maybe to make it stiffer compared to the stock one. Will lower it by buying aftermarket shackles for the rear, new dampers, new front springs, a stiffened sway bar..so on and so forth

Currently there is no motivation to turn it into a dragster, I'm just building something that would give me a thrill and a half everytime i put the pedal to metal. Need to build a drift machine while im at it...

Will go to shershah sometime next week with my mechanic to look for an engine inshAllah

why not a 4efte with a bigger turbo ? reasons , its light , fuel economy , power to weight ratio ! i think it comes with ct9 toyota turbo ! so u can put a ct12 on it for much power ! just my suggestion

SR20DET will be one hard find. Best bet is 1jzgte and that is it. Best engine for this IMHO.

How about a 1G-GTE twin turbo with 5 speed rear wheel configuration

which will eventually never have ABS/traction control or good brakes

year ago i was in a workshop ! that guy used to take out mecedez engines and put 3sfe or 4s or 5s in them ! the thing he did with the gear box was a new thing i saw first time ! he would cut the place from the gearbox where the gear is attached to the engine ! and he would find a junk gearbox (that can mate 3sfe) and he would cut the same place from it too and weld it to the mercedez gear so that it can fit 3sfe ! so my assumption from this experience is that u can mate whatever gear u want to mate with whatever engine ! but the work should be done professionally ! i mean the plate welded on the gear box should be aligned so that no issues of clutch, pressure-plates and flywheel arises ! @ ebad being a mechanical engineer i think u can do that !
P.S that mechanic did that with many cars and no complaint

and last thing on my mind right now is that whatever u do ! dont alter/cut/extend the firewall ! that means no bigger 6 in-line cylinder engines e.g 1j 2j ! its just my suggestion

@ Edge540: bro the 1G-GTE was discontinued and replaced by the 1JZ-GTE. This was also due to the poor reliability of the 1G. The 1G had bearing issues due to oil starving problems that occurred quite often, even if there were minor delays in the oil change...

@ sinner__ and hash4u : Truly appreciating your suggestions and interest on my project. Firstly @ hash4u, bro the car no matter what will undergo a complete upgrade interms of brakes. If i go with the 1JZ, then the ECU for that has ABS capability. My plan is to replace the drum brakes on the 120Y with disc brakes from the toyota crown. Further I am already trying to get hold of 4-pot calipers and cros drilled discs to go with it. It is completely stupid to have 200bhp at the wheels with bike brakes to stop it :P....in short, if i build a car thats going to be 400bhp, i will spend a proportional amount of money on the handling and the braking system to make sure it can handle every single horse thrown at it
@ sinner__ : Thanks for your suggestion and the helping hand, will let you know for sure if something comes up. You are correct, a gearbox can be matted with any engine. but this is what we call a 'Jugarh' and i'm sure youve heard Murphy's law: something that can go wrong, will go wrong. Im not gonna do any shortcuts with this car, specially in the name of safety. Therefore whatever engine i choose will have to be an original RWD configuration!

A RB20DET would be crazy, but you would need bigger rotors, brake discs on all four wheels and an upgraded suspension. Traction would be another problem which you will have to sort out.

@ ebad ! if its done properly then it will be called a good gearbox mate ! rather than jugarh
levin swapped a FWD 20v BT engine in his Hachiroku ! its not a big deal to place/adjust FWD engine in RWD car ! but its a big deal to fit a big engine e.g 1j 2j in a small bay ! which involves cutting of the firewall and alot of welds ! that would be real jugarh ! im still in favor of 4efte ! small , ecnomical , power to weight ratio and 133hp 157n.m with stock ct9 ! u can easily get 200-300hp out of this lightweight engine ! put a ct12 or even a ct20 turbo on it ! and i think some RWD gear boxes can easily mate with it (without alteration) i dont know which but there would be for sure !

if u dont like that then go with sr20det ! but i wont recomend 1j 2j ! my suggestions and ur choice

Once i get to see the engines and dimension them, I shall have a clearer vision. I promise you there wont be any sort of compromise. However I am not keen at using a FWD engine...RWD setup is going to be the way forward for this baby

putting a bigger engine on a old chassis will not be good idea, until an unless you are customizing in chassis strength accordingly and what about suspension, stearing assembly, datsun 120y has little space for RB20det or 1jz engines what about radiator plus radiator fans etc.

Oh it will be fine. I remember a member here Salman I think has 1jz in his KE70 corolla and it's working fine. So i'm sure this datsun will do fine aswell, may need some tinkering though. Just reinforce the chassis and add some weight at the back, i'm sure that'll do better. Also get coilovers all 4.
