Cylinder explosion leaves one dead, 35 injured
ISLAMABAD (updated on: July 14, 2010, 20:11 PST): At least one person was killed and 35 others injured when a gas cylinder exploded in a sweets shop at Karachi Company Market, Sector G-9, here on Wednesday.
The dead was identified as Riaz Ahmed, owner of Shikarpuri Sweets Shop. Soon after the explosion, fire erupted at the sweets shop which also engulfed the nearby shops.
Around eight to ten persons were stranded in the basement of a nearby shop, Punjab Milk Center & Refreshments.
Fire-fighters from the twin cities, Rescue 1122 teams and volunteers were busy in helping the people stranded in flames and heavy smoke while the injured were rushed to the PIMS Hospital.
When contacted, SP Saddar Capt. (retd) Liaquat Ali Malik informed APP that one person was killed in the explosion while at least 35, including a woman, were injured.
"Out of the injured, 24 have been admitted to the Emergency of PIMS Hospital and 11 others to the Burn Center of PIMS," he added.
"Five injured are serious and doctors are making efforts to save their lives," he added.
