Guys i am in need of your expert help before going to mechanic.

Vehicle is Pajero 1990 3 Door with 4D56TD Intercooler.

I traveled back to Quetta this Sunday from Hyderabad. My Pajero performed nicely. Now when I was in hilly area near Quetta, I observed that the heat Guage came to half. Well I guess it's normal but as soon as I reached Quetta, since that day my Pajero is blowing black smoke like shyt I mean just give a bit of pedal and voila the clouds of smoke. The weather here is normally 30 degrees in afternoon but I see my temp Guage go up quite easily upto quarter mark in 4 kms run. In Hyderabad where weather was around 40 degrees even than with Ac on the temp Guage didn't go up from quarter mark. But here just drive of 4km it shoots to quarter mark.
I am quite confused as before coming on journey I had its oil checked and it was filled up to the mark.
Coolant was flushed and Toyota coolant 1 gallon poured in and remaining with water.
Now guys what seems to be the problem? Why is it producing smoke with a bit of Rev?

1 day before journey i changed the coolant which I have mentioned above, could that be a cause of problem? Should I drain some of it out and flush more water? Even with these problems the oil and coolant level are upto the mark no reductions or leakages from anywhere.

@babarhyd dear pajero's get heat up on uphill drive , i mean the needle keeps moving with the weather and drive , it's usually not a constant state of indication like in common cars. mines give smoke sometime but runs fine , it's a diesel ride , sure you can have some smoke to some extent. i drained my radiator and top up whole with coolant of some Korean brand , i thought it might keep my ride cool , don't know if it's wrong to pour whole radiator is fine or not , she's fine till now after one and half year

That's what I want to know. How much hot is really hot in Pajero. No one has answered that. Though the needle stays stable at center and does not go above even with load and revving. But the problem now is smoke. Just Rev it and it's smoking quite alot as compared to it did back in Hyderabad.

Black smoke is a telltale sign of overfuelling. Heat is an accompanying symptom with overfuelling. Have the diesel injection system calibrated according to the manual and your problems should go away. Heat is directionally proportionate to the amount of energy being generated by burning fuel. The more fuel being combusted the more heat it generates. Black smoke comes from incomplete combustion. When stoic ratio gets rich and there isn't enough air to oxidize the entire fuel for a chain reaction you get black smoke as a result of incomplete combustion.

So what steps should I specifically follow to overcome this problem? If air is the culprit than I think, I better change the air filter first. And than what?

Air is not the problem. The fuel pump is injecting a lot more fuel into the engine than it should.

The air to fuel ratio is not calibrated proprlerly at the FUEL pump. Take it to diesel pump mechanic and tell him to fix the black smoke. Heat should go away aswell.

Does it has thermostat valve? If not then install it, the needle shud be at half all the whether up hill area or whether in city, 2ndly if it is giving excessive amount of smoke, then get your timing of diesel pump checked, it may be retired too much. Also get a egt gauge so you monitor the Exhaust Gas temperature, if the pumps is retired then it will increase the EGT!

Where do I get EGT from? Can the mechanic set the timing of fuel pump?

Yup ask him to advance the pump 5 degree & then you test it

Pump timing is not the only factor.

Black smoke is more fuel less air.. On a turbo diesel it can be..

1. Air filter blocked.. Also check fuel filter
2. Turbo not making proper boost.. Means less air
3. Diesel fueling is not proper.. Over fueling case
4. Pump timing too advance or retard
5. Bad nozzles and spray patters
6. Weak compression.. Yes diesel needs proper compression Warna diesel doesn't burn properly and black smoke

Go step by step.. Good luck
