Salam everyone.

I hope you all are well. I wanted to get some quick suggestions/opinions on a Pajero that I am thinking about buying. Its a 1985, Manual 3 Door 2.5 D Turbo intercooler Pajero that still has the genuine stock engine with over 250k km (according to the current owner). The AC and heater are in working condition. The car has good AT tyres (treadware is around 20 %). It was imported back in late 90s. The interior is clean and the car is mostly parked and so I did not spot any oil drippings underneath. The engine bay was clean as well and the startup was unremarkable.The car's suspension was neat and greased and on driving their were not any unusual sounds. The car has a substantial amount of body roll but I guess that is expected from a SUV from 80s.

So I need input from owners or previous owners regarding the following questions,

1) Obviously the first question is should I buy such a car or not? This would be my first SUV and I want to experiment with something not that expensive.

2) What should be a reasonable offer for this car? The current owner is asking around 8 lacs but my mind tells me 6.50 is the max I should offer for this vehicle. It is a clean car but still its around 35 years old.

3) How and where to source the parts from (if the need comes)? I live in Lahore and know a few dealers from where I source parts for my other cars but don't know much about Pajeros and their parts.

4) A good reliable pajero mechanic who is not a qasai and knows his work in Lahore?

Also any suggestions regarding what else to check in this car are also encouraged.

Waliakum Assalam, Intercooler turbo came in 1989, the low roof edition before that there was only 2.5 turbo without intercooler and I am not sure about the current market but according to my assumption it should not be more than 5 lacs.

Thank you for the correction. I have confirmed its not an intercooler. And 5 lacs seems fair sice I have screened the Pakwheels ads and most vehicles from this era are priced between 4 - 5.5 lacs.

my 2 cents;

1. If your budget permits, go for a later model. A 35 year old vehicle will not give you the real feel/experience of a good SUV. In case, you do want to buy it, get a a pre purchase inspection from a good SUV mechanic. This 1-2k can save you quiet a lot of money.

2. not above 5 unless its super clean and even then only a few thousand above 5. A pre purchase inspection from a good SUV mechanic will help you do the math to what it will actually cost you as most old SUVs require work.

3. Parts are available new (Montgomery road) and used (Bilal Ganj) and not an issue for most of the parts.

Patience is v important in searching and buying an old SUV.
There are many First Time 4x4 threads on Pakwheels which are a good freetime read.

Lastly I will quote v good advice from @consigliori (read the replies),

JazakAllah for valuable input. Initially I was looking up Surfs (1990-93) with preferably 1 Kz but then again what you have said is very right which is to have a very patient approach in looking up a SUV. The quote you have given at the end of your post is very true and I have heard it from other SUV owners as well. Definitely I want to buy something that is reliable and wont let go while passing through places like Deosai or Shanduur.
I would also like some input regarding keeping an old SUV as a separate car or is it possible to use them as a daily driver? I have a 7th Gen Honda civic Exi as my daily driver and my daily running is around 30-40 kms on roads of Lahore in the Cantt and Gulberg area. I have kept it for the past 15 years or so and at times I feel I should replace it with an old SUV (reliable) or buy an old SUV and keep it as a second car (used only for trips to north or occasional offroading). Can you kindly give your input on that as well please?

what do you mean experiment with it? what sort of experiment?
If its as good as you say, 7 isn't a bad price for it, cars are expensive now, and rupee is devalued.

As for a mechanic, @dogarz sahab should be able to guide you, he kept quite a few pajeros in lahore

When I said experimenting I meant I wanted to do "buy an old SUV" experiment and no I wasn't referring to doing any kind of experimental work on an old SUV. I am not qualified for that lol. I don't suppose a qualification is really needed in the first place?!

But yes lately I have been having ideas about getting myself an old SUV since I do a couple of tours every year to northern areas (actually did three last year). And so I want something that's reliable, easy to drive, tough and comfortable.

I know some general tidbits about some 90s SUVs but not a whole lot and so just trying to see if I can get some good pointers here from some of the more serious enthusiasts.

Unfortunately for us outsiders (outsiders as in people existing outside the SUV realm), SUVs are like candy. Of course we don't see the investment made by the drivers in terms of money, time and resource in putting together their rigs.

G Bhai. The "Genuine" non dealer SUV owners keep their rigs like their kids. When we tell the world what the rig actually cost us at home "itnay ki ghar per pari hai" people think we are showing off. now once that is sorted. If the vehicle is mint, and you do all the required maintenance, it is perfectly fine for daily use, given that you don't mind its 8kml consumption and a once a month visit to the workshop.

As far as keeping it as a second vehicle is concerned, if you have the parking space and can afford an added vehicle, get this as a second car, drive it twice a week to keep everything in order and it will be fine.

An old diesel suv requires you to give it warm up time and to not gun it like crazy on the motorway, other than that, it won't give you any issues, given you use OEM parts and a qualified mechanic

It's not only people that buy cheap SUV's. I once saw an extremely beautiful and clean diesel 80 series that was being fixed by a roadside mechanic. Upon inquiring, the owner told me that he had bought this CRUISING last month and was getting some things fixed. The way how the mechanics treated the 80 was purely inhumane.
