I can verifiably say that 100% of people of US never use the handbrake and leave the car in Park (auto) only which locks the drivetrain.

Almost all EU countries stipulate to leave the car in 1st gear to prevent it rolling off, and if you use handbrake in an area where it snows - LOL - you are not going anywhere, the brakes freeze solid.

The defunct brand of SAAB could not be locked without leaving it in reverse if it were manual, - the key wouldnt come out of ignition.

Almost all of Africa, Eastern Bloc and Russia have broken handbrakes. So its out, Chinese still are trying to understand driving.
