PBC 1st Mega Bking Trip of 2009 (to Khunjrab)

Friends
We have following options,
1. Drive from Lahore and back.
Pros
a. Cheaper.
b. Convenient as no bookings and deliveries of bikes.

Cons
a. Lots of driving on flat busy roads.

1. Transport bikes on train to Pindi and reach Abbottabad via Muree and Nathiagali.
   Pros,
   a. Save 5+5 hours of drive on flat busy roads.
   b. Save 2 days as we can sleep in the night coach.
   c. Experience the beautiful drive through the Muree hills.
   d. It would be convenient, as we would be accompanying the bikes.
   Cons
   a. Railway charges around Rs. 300 (one way) to transport bikes.
   b. Will have to empty petrol tanks which will not be returned.

2. Book bikes on trucks or hire one till Mansehra and travel on Daewoo ourselves,
   Pros,
   a. Save 7.5+7.5 hours of drive on boring busy roads.
   b. Save 3 days of trip for more interesting places we would be visiting.
   c. Would be biking mostly on roads leading to exotic places.
   Cons,
   a. Expensive.
   b. Inconvenient as bikes will have to be booked and received.
   c. Transportation can at times damage bikes.

Opinions of the participants needed. My vote is for option 3 or a combination of 2 and 3.

Sir i wud suggest combination of option 1 & 2 i.e. start riding from Lahore & reach Abbotabad via muree & nathia galee.

As far as camping, trekking etc is concern I m in.

Bro we had company of CD 100 & Sprinter 110 in our two trips while on doubling these bikes have covered ~450 KM distance per day with full throtle & wid out any trouble.

Also 1 thing to ask would we also be visiting the Khunjerab National Park as well or not ??? I have heard a lot about it...

We will certainly be driving through the Khunjerab National Park for over a hundred kms, Inshaullah. Wild Ibex and Yaks are routinely seen but to spot a Marcopolo sheep you have to be real lucky.

Gud luck with the trip,Just a few suggestions, 1 - Going via babusar top will be a hell for bikes.coz as most of u must have seen it's a jeep track from besal onwards.I have been to that trek and believe me bandaye ki pasliyan halaq mai aa jati hai jeep kaye jhatkon say..:), 2 - i'm into fishing but not into bike trips.So any of doing fishing let me know any gud spot if found. 3 - I would suggest all of u to buy tents,sleeping in tents will save u alot of cash,plus it will be an investment for ur next trips,also a tent removes the contraint of staying in hotel at night and infact at any town. (I bought a water proof tent last yr for rs 6.5k which accomodates 4 persons).

1 more thing to ask i want to know the availability of fuel in these areas ?? You know my bike consumes a lot of fuel so...

Thanks for your useful advices. I prefer the Babusar route due to an opportunity to camp besides the Lulusar lake. I feel this is the closest to heavens you can get in this world, specially if you are able to catch a fish or two.

I also want to know that have you ppl decided some tentative dates for the trip. So, that ppl who had to apply for leaves in advance should be able to plan accordingly.

Petrol is available all the way till Sost. The only long run without any pump ie over 200kms from Sost to Khunjerab pass and back. Your concern should be easily manageable.

Please keep in mind that when we go as a group we face all problems together which allows us to take care of such issues easily. Once I remember there was curfew in Gilgit and trucks were not coming to Sost which left me stranded without diesel there. Ultimately we borrowed diesel from the military which enabled us to return. Such things do happen occasionally.

We plan to finalise the dates on our next GTG with input from all our members considering their conveniences. My guess would be late May, Inshaullah.

@khanmomar Sir, in which yr u caught fish(trout) from lulusar?? According to locals,lulusar doesn't have any fish, due to some unkown reason fish dont survive in that lake. The best place to catch them is at dodipatsar lake,which is at 10-12 hrs hike from besal.

@Imtishal I couldnt find trout in Lulusar, streams of Deosai or other remote places rather small blackish fish. Trout probably is a carnivorous imported fish and wherever introduced artificially damages the local stock.
