Petrol & HOBC

Salam to all PW members!

I want to ask a question here regarding Petrol (super) and High Octane Blending Content (HOBC). What I want to know is which vehicles require HOBC, which can run on 50/50 and which can be safely run on only petrol.
Also, what is the criteria for the (necessary) use of HOBC?

A final question: What level of octane are Petrol and HOBC (87,89,etc...) ?

I stand to be corrected, but imho HOBC is 92~93 octane whereas SUPER is 87 octane...though these are the official claimed figures, we should expect them to be lesser.

Usually high compression engines require HOBC, but i can say from experience my ex USDM accord (2.4L) ran fine on 87 octane fuel.. Another friend of mine mixes HOBC/SUPER in his C200 KOMP and doesn't have any issues either..

HOBC is 98 RON and regular fuel is 90.

I would rate them at 95 and 87 respectively.

ALL german and most of JDM cars run best when on HOBC.

The cars will still run on lesser quality fuel but they will show considerably lesser performance and economy too.

I think Pakwheelers should cut back on the "meets" and "gtg's" and focus on the automobile industry news and problems faced by pakistani motorists.

Okay, so what I've learnt is that HOBC is 95 & Super is 87. Although, in the newspapers, it says "petrol, premium motor gasoline will see a reduction by 10 rs in price...". And I thought premium motor gasoline is 89 grade octane while regular motor gasoline is 87- anyway.

I know in the US, 87 89 & 91 are mostly sold with 87 (Regular) being used in most vehicles with V6 or smaller engines, and 89 for the rest. I had friends with 7 series (740, 745) running them on 89, with seemingly no problems.

So here's a question now:

Which fuel would these cars run on?

1) Toyota Mark X 250G 2.5L V6 24 valve
2) Toyota Hilux Surf 3.4L I-6 24 valve
3) BMW 530i 3.0L I-6 24 valve
4) Mercedes E240 2.6L I-6 24 valve
5) BMW 745Li 4.4L V8 32 valve.

I know Corollas, Premios, Accords, Camrys, Mark IIs are fine on petrol...but what about the aforementioned?

I think these vehicles cover all segments of vehicles.

Well Engines Over 10.4 CR Mostly Rated To Run on HOBC...!!
Well If You Mix 50/50....So It Will Be Good In Sense Of Preventing Detonation Inside Engine And Knocking........Mileage Is Not So Affected But There Comes Some Difference Actually....!!
Performance Will Surely Increase......Because Of Its High Temp Ignite-able Nature....!
Mostly Its Rated Around 93-95 RON Here Whereas Super Petrol Is Rated Around 87 RON's....!! Depends On How Good The Pump Is As They Also Mix Them....!!

i have been using local octane in my white XE, charades and 86 fwd model in Pk. all ran better with octane.

but for jdm engines local octane ron is too low grade.

you mentioned Khi ron level of octane, that is different (higher) than in Lhr.

CR=Compression Ratios...

Engines Having Higher Compression Ratios Knocks And Fuel Detonates Itself Inside On Super Fuel So You Need HOBC To Make Them Run Properly So That Detonation And Knocking Issues Won't Occur...!!

High Octane Blending Component (HOBC) is designed for use in high compression petrol engines. It allows higher compression ratio engines operate with greater efficiency and deliver power. HOBC is available at selected petrol pumps in Pakistan. If you need more information about the fuel octane requirement for your car, refer to the vehicle owner's manual, or in some cars the back side of gas lid.

Most of the modern german cars need HOBC.

It says all Suzukis including Altos need 91 Octane fuel. I dont know if I can trust this info.

How can Super be 87 & Super Unleaded be 90 when they cost the same, and the are both unleaded, you know.

HOBC as claimed in Pak is 98 ron, regular is 87 ron. In uk, our regular is 95 ron and HOBC - 97,98,super hi-ocate is 102 ron.

I guess apart from the minor octane level difference, it got more to do with marketing the product under two different names.
