I havent driven that specific model year, I owned two peugeots a decade ago in the past and have driven a courtesy car 106 a 2001 model.
First one i owned when i was student back in 1999 and in limited budget i got a used 1996 405 1.8 petrol and driven for couple of years apart from one issue i faced, it started to have heater matrix problem. part wasnt expensive but its installation almost take apart whole dashboard so service charges were way more than the part itself. engine wise never gave me an issue.
Second one i got again newer peugeot 406 in 2000, it was massive change from 405 and was luxury, and top notch security pad - that my mechenic messed up trying to by pass, which later peugoet itself couldnt fix after many tries, i ended up fixing it by a disconnected wire.
though i had bad experience, but that were not related to car performance, they are good cars specially the diesel engines re good. they have terrible market resale value though in UK, i lost almost 60% after 2 years of use of both cars
