Aoa, could someone guide me on the prado 1996-99 3.0 diesel (1kz engine). I want to know the common faults, fuel average, major things to look at while buying and an appropriate price for a reasonable one.

I bought my TZ 1996 1KZ-TE more then a year ago for 30 lacs with weak turbo and wiring/sensor issues.

At that time I was getting 6 - 7km/L. After fixing known issues... now I get 9.5km/L on highways/motorways... and around 8km/L in northern areas.

Maintenance is expensive.. so apart from initial price.. think about how your maintenance budget.

AFAIK common faults:

• Overheating (engine and transmission)
• Weak, faulty, leaky turbos (This is major repair)
• Weak and abused fuel pump, this will cause lack of power, less pick.
• Very common O/D error: Car won't shift into top gear and O/D light in dash starts blinks when driving (Wiring, sensor or ECU issue)
• There could be other shifting problems (e.g. slippage). An experienced mechanic would tell by driving/accelerating.
• 4x4 issues, like center diff lock disengages under load.
• Blocked heating core. So check both AC and heater. Don't think its a big deal, but better to know.

generally the cars are bulletproof. common faults include (apart from the previous answer) weak lower ball joints, a hazard in some cases. fuel average isn’t bad though 1HD land cruisers would be preferable over this. i get around 7.5-9 in city depending on how i drive. while buying be sure to cross check both the frame numbers on the body and the frame itself to make sure they’re the same, and enter it in toyodiy and check the color code, year, model etc. i think getting a trusted technician to check the car would be a wise decision. these engines aren’t smoke free but they should not have a lot of smoke unless you’re redlining them. i think you should get a good one around 35-40 but it will require patience and a lot of searching regardless of where you live. also be sure to buy something with minimum repaints as it will be harder to sell if it has a lot of repaints. stick with the 1kz, the 3.4 might seem appealing at some point but their fuel average is really bad. 2.7s are underpowered and the 1kd engine will not survive on pakistani diesel

I have 2000 model GX prado with 1kz manual transmission. These jeeps are very robust and powerful. The only problem i faced was faulty front differential. Which still makes a duzz sound when u change gear as it is full time 4wd. Other than that no problem. No over heating.

i want to ask that if i buy toyota prado rz(3 door 1998,1kz will be better in fuel average or 5vz ?

How to repair leaky or weak turbos? are Chinese aftermarket turbos any good?

Also looking for a pump testing place. The diesel pumps repairable? are there aftermarket solutions? Any place in Rawalpindi?

You have enumerated the problems very well.

I have bought a 95 Prado 70-series and converted it from manual to auto. The transmission is fine. But as soon as i converted i got the issues. these were fixed by the mechanic who told me that it was only due to loose wiring grips.
