Hand brake light only indicates that the brake is engaged when pulled. When you dis-engag it (or realease the hand brake) the hand brake warning light turns off. As, @Storm said, If it does not turn off this means you have a switch problem attached at the back of the hand brake.
The other thing is, it could be a loose hand brake wire, if the wire is loose hand brake lever will not go to its original position and switch will not close properly and you will still see the brake light ON. I would suggest to get the hand brake wire retighten from a good mechanic.
