How you doing your car is OBD1. It means when your check Engine light is getting on it must give you a Code.
Keep an eye on your Engine light how many times it is flashing for example if it is flashing two times first and then after a short break it is flashing three times it means it is trouble Code 23.
Go to the index in Service Mannual/Repair Manula same thing and check the reason for this code and change that part your problem will be fixed.
As a side note as you said you have a hole in Air filter inlet so replace the hose cause it could making trouble for MAs (mass air flow sensor) to get wrong reading and giving a wrong input to ECU (Electronic Controle Unit).
And there is a sensor on throttle body too to sense the opening and closing position of throttle door don't forget to check it out too.
Just check that sensor and take it out blow some air in it and you will be fine it your problem is not solved then tell me all symptoms again. you will get rid of this shitt.
