Project : Custom 4x4

Project Timeline : 6-10 Months

Budget : 7-10 lacs

Location : Islamabad/Rawalpindi

Objectives : 4x4/Offroad Capable Local Hand Built Vehicle

Its been a long time since I last posted here on PW. Im here with a project I am doing/thinking of doing with my friends . I need experts opinion on this one.

We wish to build a custom 4x4 capable vehicle completely from the ground up including a custom made chassis and fabricate a custom body for it. Some told us to replicate a HMMWV body and place it on an existing chassis. But we want to do it all custom built.

As I dont know crack $hit about offroaders, experts please jump in. I know much of it wont make sense right now, but I have a few questions, plz answer if you can...

1. Can the chassis be made out of tubular frame ?
2. Does the engine, transmission & axles determine the chassis dimensions ?
3. What engines (2.5l +) are available in Pakistan, new or slightly used complete with transmission ?
4. Factors affecting off road performance ?!

How will you get your own brewed chasis registered to be able to use the vehicle on the road?

thats almost a tough or i must say impossible job...you will have to face lot of complications in registering this kind of vehicle also it will not give you required results while off roading..my suggestion is that you should find a dead off roading machine and give it life as per your requirements...

Tubular frame is the way to go, but only if you know how to fishmouth tube joints and weld nicely.. Cover it up with a fiberglass skin. you would need to be very very finicky with the diffs and braking arrangements

As for engines you can pretty much find a good oldschool small chevy V8 (SCed if liked), TH350 trans (supra automatic) and a Dana44 centre

Its a very very tough job to take up - and getting the suspension geometry right is only the first obstacle - the final game begins when you want good weight distribution and longevity

I also started with the same style like you but after consulting the experts I am just gona finalized the deal with army auctioned for 1962 Willys BF-161
and InshAllaha it will be restored bolt to bolt original no fancy changes no 1C,2C,3C 4C turbo engine , modified suspension or fancy interior unfortunately most of the jeeps in pakistan were restored with changes but I will try to be stock.& Inshallaha final result will be

As for tubular frame i think most custom built rigs gora's made have rectangular bar chassis and tubular frame.

whoa, this is going to be fun.

i'd suggest that you first decide your primary usage (dunes, rock crawling, mud bogs etc) then your powerplant & drivetrain and then build your vehicle around the powerplant.

as for tubular frames etc you MUST ensure that it is at least twice as strong as you'd ever need it to be and that the welds are 100% perfect. many people in PK have built VW based buggys and all have failed as the frames they've build are flimsy and offer no structural rigidity (flexes like a plastic ruller).

i'd suggest you do alot of research on the net adn speak to offroaders like the IJC guys who'd be able to guide you best. If you ever need my help you can always contact me and i'll try and swing by for a while to help you with your problems as well.

Think wild, like UNIMOG's portal on CJz frame, avoid building complete chassis, it will consume huge cost & time, so try any Amercian or German frame, best of Luck!

I know its kinda really hard in terms of time & $$. I think 10 lakhs is a good enough amount for it. Me and my team have loads of time for such a project because its been a long time since we had some fun. Working long hours for hte past year on my corporate projects has really pushed me to go out and do this...

The picture will be alot clearer with the description given in points below...

• Complete custom design (except engine/drivetrain & MAYBE chassis)
• It will be a Commercially available vehicle if we succeed...
• It has to be a type of SUV. Built for on-road & offroad performance balanced in a perfect mix.
• Preferrably, it must use an engine & drivetrain setup which can be acquired NEW from any local manafacturer or assembler... (Toyota, Mitsubishi, Nissan....). Overseas imports can also be done if feasible.
• If a chassis has to be acquired from another vehicle, it must be available in multiple numbers locally. We will restore it ourselves.
• Please provide pictures of designs for inspiration... Im providing some options below.... We're giving precedence to PW users on the decisions we make in this project. So tell us what you think.

I know we're going crazy with this idea but still, we wish to innovate...
