Project Toyota Hilux (Single Cabin) to Camper Truck

I want to start a project of converting a single cab hilux to camper van, with just some facilities (not fully fledged camper). For example, I would install bed and eating space only, with a small 12-24v fridge, and solar modules. I am looking for a somewhat earlier model like 90s to 2000s with good engine, gears, suspension, AC. I need suggestions for this project. Moreover, which models/generations of hilux are the best for this project, plus the approximate price of the vehicle only. I expect to spend not more than 2M on the whole project.

Have always thought about this but I always wonder how comfortable is single cabins driving seat? Any input on seat comfort , can they be adjusted?

It shall be an interesting project.

I shall suggest 1990s Hilux (LN106) with 3L engine. Price of this model is reasonable. But this project needs personal attention during restoration and fabrication work.

Well sir Hiluxes are comfortable IMO. Seats can be installed as per user preference. I thought of single cab as they have more extended cab length for Caravan buildup. Double cabs might not be suitable for this project.

Yes Sir I agree with you.. I have considered many vehicles for this project but I think hiluxes are the best as they have more parts availability, and offroading capabilities. However, the main concern is finding a nice n clean vehicle.

I have driven several single cabin hiluxes and even though they were govt maintained (fucced to the absolute limit) they were very comfy. Older double cabin 4wds had leaf springs in the front while single cabin 2wd ones did not. The one with coilsprings are very comfortable except for the non power steering. Thats a bit of hard work.

The older 2L 3L engines are a bit slow. They have torque but i wouldnt drive them on highways unless they were 100% healthy. Most older hiluxes are in bad shape in pakistan. You would need to spend a lot of money to bring them in shape and then even more money to make a camper. Single cabin 2wd ones shouldnt be expensive but their demand is also high as people use them as loaders. If you want to drive long distances get one with coilsprings in the front. They are comfortable

That's correct. These engines make a lot of noise particularly on reaching 100 kph, and you find it hard going beyond this speed.

But 3L is a fuel economical and also reliable engine. Takes a lot of beating. Best for loading duties. 5L is an even better version of it.

Its not really economical as i think its IDI. Modern DI turbo diesels are 30-40% more economical with more torque and power.

Good to hear but can the front seat be adjusted reclined or is it fixed like vigos rear seat. I kept a Silverado for sometime in Gulf it was extra cabin instead of double and rear row was fixed like mini bus seat. It was always an argument who will sit on the rear seat

There are very few seats that can be considered worse than vigos rear seat. The front is a bench seat that can be reclined. And if op really wants to build a purpose built camper he can install after market seats.
I would rather drive the single cabin than a corolla. Its that good.

True but using a modern diesel engine in 1990s pickup shall result in substantial increase in cost of the project. Also, doing a proper swap with connections of wiring, sensors and ECU etc is a big ask, beyond the capacity of most mechanics.

3L is non EFI, easy to use and troubleshoot.

Thats correct. Whats the max acg you have heard from 3L. My sarkari drivers usually claim 5-6kmpl.

8 to 10 km/l with a nicely tuned engine. That is the major selling point of 3L.

But as you know drivers of govt vehicles are fond of fuel theft. It's a common practice.

Which one is better? 4x2 or 4x4?

4x2 is more comfortable while 4x4 has the additional benefit of off roading capability.
