Question regarding a few mods in D16

Hey all.

Just wanted to know what minor mods I could do in my D16 under 5k. How much would a cold air intake cost? What would be the gain in power with one?

Anything a bit over 5k is also OK.

Any comments would be appreciated.

Yes well, If you do come to Pindi, you can get the following...

Intake - 2000
Exhaust - 2500
Headers-2500
Plugs - 1000
WIres - 1500

Its your choice....you can buy what you want from the above. My recommendation wud be Intake + Headers + Exhaust...that might get you like 2-3cars gap in a drag..

you cant have wine on a beer budget....five thousand is peanuts if you want some serious performance. what kind of a D16 motor is it anyway? D series honda engines are slow and not meant for performance at all....

and kiani...he can have a 2-3 car difference provided he is racing with a alto or something....lol

i take from the prices you posted that these are not branded parts..they are either chinese or locally done stuff...that will produce more sound than performance.

intake, header and an exhaust will yield a little more low end torque...at high rpms...you wont feel a thing.

szuberi; Agreed with you on the fact regarding the ammount of cash being 'peanuts'. But i'm just looking for a few minor mods that gives a bit of advantage over a stock motor.

Those prices are unbelievably low. But then again, must be non-branded parts.

Its a D16Y8. Not looking for races. Just a bit of mods.

Ya Man, these are localy made/chinese stuff!! @ Whisky got a budget of 5-7k, all he can get is this!!!

And Im not an expert on Honda motors so, I guess I estimated the gap a wee bit more!! LOL!

Gap wont increase by half a car.

Id spend the 5000rs on getting the engine back into shape and using better oil and stuff.

Good mantainence is very important!

i have had three civics so far now...a 98 si (d16y8), a 00 SIR (B16A2) and now currently a 99 EX (D16Y7)...and based on my experience...unless you go turbo on a d-series engine...there is no point in spending any money for bolt on mods cuz i can tell you from my experience doing dynos on friend's cars...the gains are minimal....and not worth spending any money. The D series engines are not very responsive.

The AEM cold air intake (US$250) yields about 10 hp on a Y8 motor at 5500RPM...you dont have that much money and you will not be driving at 5500RPM at most times right?

the Y8 is a good motor....SOHC VTEC 127 hp...just as someone said...spend this money updating its maintenance.

i rather drive stock than put cheap parts on my car...they will reduce engine life.

The AEM cold air intake is interesting. If I can get extra 10hp from that, i'll DEFINITELY buy it

Apart from that, the engine is running with optimum performance. It's totally not abused and runs great. Maintenance is done on regular basis and its as good as new.

The 1998 Si has the same D16Y8 as the 2005 Civic sedan in Pakistan, no?

No. the Y8 series anded up on 2000, from 2000 Plus civic had a distributor less engine which is d17a
I dont know what it is called over here, But have seen it manay cars,

Aem intake for $250, dont worth it,
250$=15,000

In only 6 or 7 thousand , you can add all things which are recommanded by some one above,
It will be more good and will result in more performance,

yeah...the 01-05 civics all had the D17 engine with the exception of the SIR model which had a K20 base.

if you dont have the money...dont buy the AEM...but i would still recommend buying a branded product which is specifically designed for your car.

i have slightly used splitfire plugs. if ur car is on petrol not cng they give a really nice output. if interested lemme know

For carby cars, you have to get t he Filter, can be same as that of EFi but then you have to make the pipe and carby adapter your self...

D16 is an ok engine. It can pick up some hp with an intake, honestly the AEM is a great intake but you can get close enough power with a cheaper system. You can take off the catlytic converter and put in a more straight through design. 2" piping would work good.

The cheapest thing is free (if you do it yourself). You can always advance the ignition timing a couple of degrees. But that might require you to run premiem gas (petrol)

salmang...the y8 was first available on the 96 civics...not the 00 upward models (dont know about pakistan though)

the d17 motor (01-05 civics) does have a distributor...and there are basically four variants....all motors are 1.7L though

D17A1 - 115 hp @ 6100
D17A2 - 127 hp @ 6300 VTEC
D17A6 - 117 hp @ 6100 VTEC
D17A8 - 100 hp @ 6100 - CNG model

I am Dumb when it comes to Honda :).................
so much SOHC engines...
i am just interested in B16 and B18 Varients.......they are mean engines...........others are just running whole VTEC gen on SOHC...and i hate SOHC in new gen engines.........
AIr Intake headers and big mouth muffler is enough on D series.......they are already high compression engine mades.......as i think so!!
