Rear Wheel Drive Vs Front Wheel Drive

I have noticed that most cars in pakistan are front wheel drive, is there any specific reason for that, is it more economical? Does FWD have any advantage over RWD? I personally dont like the idea of front wheel drive I think it puts too much strain on the front wheels - accelerating, braking and steering. Whats the purpose of the back wheels have then??

front wheel drive cars have better traction,better cornering,better deceleration and are more efficient than rear wheel drives... all of the new cars are front wheel drives or all wheel drives.... and yea, rear wheel driven cars are good in drifting

its true that FWD got better pickup...cornering but its also true that to much load on front..engine load + car steering rack ends + axles in front driving car...so i think its much load whereas on RWD its divided.........thats Why RWD won't took out much suspension work than FWD......

THE ANSWER IS SIMPLE

in pakistan we have cars that are below 200hp..and are not high performance

a front wheel drive car cant handle more then 200 horspower efficiantly(meaning that tyres cant spin brake and steer altogether at that much power)

all cars above that power are rwd
consider example of celica rsx integra etc all have below 200 hp almost and are fwd ..

there are ofcourse exceptions

THE MAIN DISADVANTAGE OF RWD
well rwd cars have oversteer(tails) and thats hard to control for a normal driver(like uor dad or driver) ....modern cars tackle this by traction control systems....

BELIVE ME KAY A RWD CAR IS 100000 TIMES MORE FUN THE A FWD...TO AGREE ALL U HAVE TO DO IS DRIVE A RWD CAR WITHOUT TRACTIONS

main problem eith thta setup is because of the heavy tail the tail breaks out in the corner..like porsches.. so a simple rule has tto be mastered and that is slow in fast out....

well if you have 50 50 weight distribution than u have the best of everything. better cornering better braking better traction.

I totally agree with sheraz_shahid .
Also, RWD cars can be cornernered much faster than FWD cars if you know what you're doing (you gotta floor it in between the corner and put opposite lock on the steering).
Even at High Speed cornering, they give the driver a lot more confidence than a FWD car.
They do tail a lot when pushed hard or in the wet, so you gotta be a dedicated driver to like a RWD car.

RWD are real beauties. Excellent cornering. You can take them as fast as you want on a corner.And as you increase the accelertion on the corner you will feel that the car is getting more grip whereas this is not the case with the front wheels and if u take a turn at high speed the front wheels starts skiding. I think Salarzee has somewhere explained the difference of oversteer and understeer very beautifully.
P.S Anyone can tell that what are the good alternates engines in RWD for Corolla 82.

ideally the car should be mid-engined and 4wd. like a murcielago or the old 996 turbo (there's NOTHING like a good 4 wheeled drift).

Realistically though RWD is good enough, FWD is for girlie-boys who can't handle real power (200BHP+) or for traffic light grand prixs. FWD is a good idea for economy cars (or what we fools call "luxury" cars in pakistan) in terms of packaging and cost, but there is a reason why All (non 4x4) BMW's are RWD, and NO supercar is FWD.

In fact, small engined cars are better performers as front wheel drive coz in rear wheel drive setups with the engine in longitudnal position there is immense power loss and small engined cars cannot get along with that much power loss. Hence, the engine is kept in transverse position with drive axles very near to the drive wheels, thus compensating for the small engine output.

Take for instance of a three wheeler. Piaggio direct axle rear engined three wheeler is better positioned to gain pick up and utilize its engine output to maximum. Whereas, the front engined API three wheeler with a differential at rear is falling far short in pick up or to utilize the engine output ( Both these vehicles have same engines )

Best Engine output utilisation formula

Keep the engine output shaft as direct and as near as possible to the drive wheels without any L or T type routing of power to the wheels.

Rear wheeled drives with engines at front have L and T type of power output setup.

Whereas, Front wheel drives have straight line -------- type power output transfer arrangement.

front wheel drive manages HP till some extend.....Rear wheel Drive handles more than that of FWD....b/w better makes 4WD or AWD setup...........
On FWD....all load was putted on front result in earlier suspension worn out...on RWD it reduces till some extent...RWD is bit hard on drive and control but its balanced load as engine was mounted straightly and driven by differential....
simply FWD is like engine is pulling you..
whereas RWD is pushing you........
