You are doing this backwards, before fiddling the carburetor, you need to make 100% sure everything is top notch perfect.
Here is the list of items
1 engine should be maintaining operating temp (meaning thermostat valve is must)
2 distributor should be perfectly working (specially centrifugal advance)
3 pcv should be perfect (whole breathing setup)
4 air box should be sealed correct to carby top so it only sucks air through filter
5 all vacuum hoses should be correctly installed
After all above is top notch and equal to workshop manual data, only then mess with carburettor.
