Resolving Hilux 3.0 D4D engine blowby

Hi! my 3.0 D4D 2005 Thai Vigo is having slight blowby. The engine has done 130k km and appears perfectly fine, no smoke at the back at all, starts smoothly. But there is slight blowby on taking out the oil dipstick and on removing the engine cap. I took it to two different mechanics and was advised to keep driving and check oil loss by one; while the other suggested overhauling as he thinks that the slight Whistle sound on raving implies demage to turbo. I have read several threads on this forum which suggest the whistle is normal (it's very slight and only on raving). How do I diagnose what's causing the blow by and how can it be repaired? Also, how does slight blow by reflect on engine condition? The mechanic said it's weak; is that a serious concern that will require a huge bill for repair?

First, relax. Second, its probably not a weak engine, mechanics love to give this diagnosis. Third, does the vehicle reduce oil? when you start it in the morning, stand behind it and ask someone else to turn the key and check if any slight blue smoke comes. Thank you for the response. I read the post you suggested and easy finally was able to breathe some air. The post recommends clearance, timing and compression Testing - will these diagnose what's causing the blow by? What parts I might need to get repaired to fix this. I am asking as this is my first disel 4x4 car and I have no experince of 4x4s or disel engines. The mechanics usually charge a naive like crazy; how much roughly do these testings cost? I would really appreciate any guidance that you can provide. Thanks.

this is probably to do with valve seals or valve clearance, those tests shall identify. they aren't really expensive. If its a well known place,they usually don't charge for them as its part of a diagnosis process and usually diagnoses(the most important part of repair) is free

Thank you so much! I had my car checked in Islamabad electronically by car fest and Nazir Autos - just to find out that it was mechanically perfect with NO WORK required at all!!! While the ustad said "the engine has blow" - the experts said it's normal disel engine blow and a perfect soundless engine!! The whistle sound which the ustaad referred to as "Turbo dying due to engine blow" - was a whistle installed in silencer to make a beautiful sound on raving.

I cannot thank you enough and that discussion on D4D engines that you referred! I was advised to have the engine "overhauled" by two so called "ustaaads"- and would've ended ruining my engine for nothing!

I have changed the CL transmission oil (Toyota genuine was recommended by Pearl Lube and went with it). I have changed the coolant, oil and oil filter and air filter. Previously delo 400 was being used. I have used that for now and as advised by pearl lube - will change that in 2000 km and shift to deli gold 15w40. And will stick to that afterwards. Engine has done 130k. Is that correct advice? The engine is not reducing oil at all - I checked at 400. I asked pearl lube if I can shift from mineral to illy synthetic and he said since engine is not consuming oil it is safe and healthier for engine to make the shift. Kindly advise on this.

One last thing - the Vigo doesn't have a heater installed. All I have been told so far is that they an install a heater but I will have to take to the mechanic to shift between heater and AC; as only one will work at one time. So in summer I take the car to him and he turns off heater and turns AC on. And I do the same in winter - and he switches the heater on instead. Is there no option where both can work simultaneous and I don't need to visit the mechanic repeatedly???

I wouldn't shift to illy synthetic, usually that is too strong for engines to handle and indigestion usually takes place. If you wish to switch, properly flush the engine before making that move.
I am not certain about this, but it all depends on what system you have installed in your vehicle, will need pictures to be able to understand the problem of a no heater.

Just a question after 8 years, did you expereince any issues afterwards regarding blowby with engine health?
