after a long layoff, work has restarted on my Splitty. The reason for stopping work was a wretched mechanic who overhauled the engine and after running in a sound not pleasant could be heard from the engine.... it was reopened, remachined with new big-ends and mains and mechanic got busy with run of the mill cars and put my VW engine on the back burner. He would not give the engine back to me in parts and would keep saying I 'll start work soon. Now the engine is a day away from being completed again. Meanwhile, car has been prepared to get it's final coat of paint in a day or two. I am trying to get it ready for the 4th annual cross country rally. Though I may not be able to get some essential parts that I need to import in time but will make do with whats available here.

with the amount of money you seem to have dished out you could have easily had the most well known mechanic overhaul your beetles engine right in your living room and the engine would have purred. Even dr. Sb is near the place the splitty is being worked upon you could have gotten a "by manual" overhaul.

the previous owners had told me that the engine was overhauled and not run in ..... when we opened the engine it seemed unused and new. After normal washing and cleaning...replacing rotten leaking pushrod tubes we repacked the engine putting new piston rings and an original gaskit kit. while engine was running in it purred ... when I drove the car for the fist time...a long run it sounded beautiful ... then we didnt start the car up for a few months as body work was being carried out.....when we started it had a thudding sound on acceleration ... turned out to be a bigend bearing failure

Dr. Sb is the first person I went to but he refused to take on the project .... then on my VW friends persuasion tool it to another VW engine specialist who had his nakhras ..... far from doing it in my drawing room. Then went to another VW specialist who insisted that he will not just the engine but the whole car .... I was fed up and had enough confidence in Mehtab to do it up for me ... after all he learnt his trade at Modern Motors working on VW engines.

Now the engine has been redone by Mehtab but under Dr. Sb/s supervision.

Question is..is it purring? If you have any doubts, just bring it with you in November. You'll get a chance to check out Shahzeb's Oval engine...that baby really purrs... We can get it done by Khalid Sahib and you can take it back with you.

Oh ok now that you mentioned it I remember him mentioning this and also that the crank had some isues dont remember exactly.

Who were these vw specialists may I ask.

In my very humble opinion and with the admission that I know too little about vws our vw freinds have strange basis of bestowing the vw specialist title.

Mohsin sb, the VW flat four is a very very simple engine to build, what was the need for a VW specialist in this case? I can count half a dozen people in Karachi who could do it very easily in one sitting. Its not anything special like desmodromic valve train that requires experience or adjusting a cummins BT valvegear which requires training. The key for longevity is to use correct sealants on it. specially the crankcase. After being stored it is a good idea to prime the engine externally from the oil switch port before firing it up.

oh yes I know this shop and I think Dr sb would know me by my VW Golf too. he had contacted me a few times for japanese problems like stuck EPS in Honda city, no shifting in CF3 accord etc. He once led me onto a trail of a shipment of NOS VW Golf Parts from Afghanistan, they were NOS parts but were all mk1 items - useless for me.

Right behind his shop is the exhaust fabricator I used, I had him make a lot of stainless steel exhausts which were quite a sight when he was done.
