Restoration of a Volkswagen Type 2/23 Kombi 1958

There is one 197x model Volkswagon kombi single piece front screen and sliding door windows, with tall squarish tail lights rusting in Firdous Colony behind the Total pump in street along side a P-JO (peugeot) soft top - saw last before rains. she has all the rear intact pay a visit & see if it can help your power train point, If i happen to pass-by sometime in a day or 2 I will snap and upload the pic & google map

its been a while since i got a chance to visit the firdous colony area, plus am in a corner of balochistan these days, working, enjoying the sun sand and shimmering blue water, returning to KHI on weekend. will see how soon I can be in that area with my camera.-

not much progress on the bus as I have been to busy doing some other stuff. Though I have had a guy coming everyday removing rust and the bus's body is almost rust free.....except from underneath

some progress atlast.........got the safari windows cleaned up, primered and installed. Before installing, the threads were capoot and had to be rethreaded

while most of the body is primered after bringing it to bare metal state. It needs to go to a denter now.

My advice...get the Safari's out of the way before sending it to denter's. OG Safaris are as costly as USD1200 a set so you wouldn't be wanting them to be damaged/stolen/misplaced during all the panel beating job.

B/w whats the update on the flat four and the tranny? Any progress?

had no idea they were that expansive....will take care. Engine is going for a rebuild to a VW specialist in Karachi on Monday. The engine is 1600 cc dual port.

i went to the area after almost like 3 months or close couldn't find the Kombi at location asked a shopkeeper casually and he informed 3 cars were of the owner & got those removed and taken by some kabarya on big loading truck shortly before eid now the place is under demolition almost a vacant plot now. am sorry guys.

Bad news...seems another one of the vintages was butchered alongwith her cousins.

rubbish!! I pulled the Kombi out of there two days before Eid and it is under restoration.

The other two cars are safe and sound in its owners home....nothing has gone to the kabaria.

progress report

Kombi is now getting ready for a big surprise.....the engine is almost complete now and will start it up tomorrow. Hopefully it should be installed by the end of this week.

brakes are dismantled and being restored.

I expect to have it running before eid holidays.....

one painter has been on it for many days and he has removed all rust from the external body. Now he is working on the inside of the Kombi. I plan to paint the kombi temporarily without getting any denting or patch work done. This would save the body from anymore rusting and will give it a reasonable appearance.

Actual restoration will only start once I am done with my Splitty VW restoration. Some pics taken yesterday

definitely but not at the moment....I love the low rider look

Bus is being readied in a frenzy.....

engine done and run in on the ground......will be put in the bus on tuesday

Brakes completely overhauled and reassembly in process.....Target - drive the bus around next Sunday.

Oh yes! wiring complete.....brand new original ign switch, radio and horn will be installed on tuesday. Brand new hubcaps will go on the wheels as soon as rims are painted......

How come NO work or mention of the underbody?? Thats where the major work will be! And that's where you should concentrate on first. Tilt van over forty five degrees, secure her with cables or ropes to prevent rolling over, than go for it with wire brushers and phosphoric acid. Make sure workers wear masks and gloves. Some sand balsting will also be called for. Meanwhile send the front suspension and rear swing arms for powder coating.
