Restoration of a Volkswagen Type 2/23 Kombi 1958

This is another of my ongoing restoration projects. I bought this van a couple of days before on Eid i.e. around the 30th of August 2011. This is the oldest known VW Bus in Pakistan as per Romano of Volkswagen Club of Pakistan. The Bus is quite clean considering it's age and having being parked under the sky for the last 6-7 years which has contributed to its roof being in badly rusted and rotten state.....work has started with derusting of the body inside and out. Keep watching this space for updates and progress on restoration.

Since I plan to work on it till it is on the road I thought I 'd start a new thread as this keeps me under pressure somewhat to keep the work going

Rust had penetrated the primer and had to be removed immediately to prevent further rusting.

Since my painter Zahoor is not yet back from his Eid holidays, I applied the primer (red oxide) though not my preferred product but this will be removed again soon once the denting starts. IT'll atleast protect it for a couple of months.

Initially I had the impression that she was pretty "straight" but looking at this picture reveals that there was quite a bit of filler hidden under the paint and she isn't all that straight as she initially looked. She needs a good panel beating job. What are your thoughts on selection of a panel beater for her?

the bus has big flat panels which need a real good panel beater. I am not sure who would get to do it, Muntazir has to finish with my splitty first before I consider him.....lets see

So whats the update on this oldie @mohsinikram? Its been a while since the thread has received any updates.

Has the flat four been referred to mechanic for a general overhaul yet? How about the de-rusting/paint stripping status?

I have engaged one painter to remove all rust, scrap to bare metal and put primer. He is down with fever so not coming since Friday.....right hand side and rear of bus remains to be worked on, rest is all primered.

I am gathering advice on engine and gear pairing. It has its original gear box which came with its 1192 cc 36 hp engine. Bus has come with a 1500 cc dual port engine minus flywheel, pressure & clutch plate and gearbox. What do you suggest I should do.....I would like to keep the original gear in place but then it wouldn't match up with a 1500 cc.....or maybe it would. As soon as my denter and painter are back from their eid holidays, I will start on the beetle with absolute attention and keep the work on the bus ticking as well, perhaps mechanical.

Romano had a 2L bus engine with him some time ago...
