At this stage I have to be glad of ANY progress! The meter has finally arrived and is sorted. Even the temp gauge has been synchronised with the sending unit to give an accurate reading. The speed bar doesn't move jerkily any more either ( NOW what is needed is just some speed to show on it!!!)

if only the gbox would cooperate...........

What an effort put in... will surely bear fruit soon. This is certainly a big achievement considering your resources.

I was wondering have you considered contacting Mercedes directly and share your effort. Perhaps their marketing team might feature your Benz as a commendable DIY project and perhaps....just perhaps....gift you the genuine vintage parts.....

whats the plan once shes ready.... will she be a keeper ....or sold of to the highest antique bidder.... she is certainly catching attention and its about time a collector approaches you.

That is praise indeed for which I am very grateful :). I think Mercedes Benz will be horrified to know what has been done to one of their products and will express their views accordingly! However, if they offer the unobtainable parts as a way of stopping, what to them is absolute sacrilege, then it may be worth a try!

Once the old bird is ready, she will definitely be a keeper:) by the time I go thru the now all too familiar exercise of acquisition, part sourcing, restoration, reassembly etc......I get to the point where I feel no one could possibly "pay" me for all the effort, soul searching and heartache! It doesn't seem right that all that effort is translated into money. Besides, it wouldn't be an economic transaction as the actual expense goes far beyond the perception of values of these old motors!

Nevertheless, good to know it is catching attention on these forums. Will be glad to share experiences of a half a mis- spent lifetime going after these relics!

On the contrary Mercedes Benz should embrace with pride the fact that you boldly went beyond what few men would dare. This was more then a herculean task which is highly commendable. You actually proved what would not even meet the figment of imagination of the average car admirer. To wish for and to get done has a bridge in between which you so courageously crossed facing all odds.

That is sheer hard work , dedication and a final product which we can proudly say "Bon a petite" for the craving desires a Mercedes fan can indulge in. I am in particular a fan of the 1990 300-sel , 2000 c-180 , the 1995 e-500 and off course every Benz which has been pampered. I am not much drowned in admiration for your particular model however the job done would make even the most novice of us get up and offer a standing ovation.

Pleased to know that you will keep the grand bird. There is no price for nostalgia. I should have known better then to bring out the atrocious option of selling. Its a case of passion against money and some times passion cannot be bought.....

Thank you again, for all that you have written. I just hope that the end product will be worth all this praise and genuine appreciation. For now yor words have served as encouragement for me to kick start the resto by going ballistic on sorting out the gearbox. Have decided to replace it with a non electronic item if the morons working on it don't get their fingers out! For this I owe you!

I share your enthusiasm of the W126, I have a couple of them, both V8s, one is a coupe. As for the mid nineties 500E, yet another Q-car, I have actually driven one in the UK. This was an original and therefore left hand drive. ABSOLUTE DYNAMITE!! The extra-flared wheel arches compared to the standard 124 set it off really nicely. As for the C180, this one am afraid, has never stirred my juices...

I must confess to being an incorrigible car enthusiast and restorer of sorts and am only too glad to note your sentiments regarding this breed of person

its sad, really is.....the merc must have been brand new almost, the year that she passed away. The remains of the indicator lamp showing to be a '66 onwards model. She died in 1967. As fr the Caddilac, it certainly must have been a bit flashy for a lady of her austere standards, esp being a convertible!

how are you planning to run this meter?

hello. We finally located a 2Jz g'box that runs f the single ECU that rus the engine and we ave gears that change........automatically! Just need to hook up the overdrive switch. The speedometer will run manually by installing a gear mechanism in the "dumchee". Will be able to give you exact specifics once its done. And I thot setting up the interior was going to be an issue!!!!

how are you planning to run this meter?

the first pic shows the tail piece taken off the g'box and the second one is of the cog that gives the electronic pulse to the regular "toyota" speedo. The third pic is of a different tail piece and the gears etc have been machined to mate to the cog that will turn a conventional speedo cable for the mechanical speedometer. The same exercise was carried out on the 1UZ g'box used in the 109. It works fine and I hope this will too!

Finally the gearbox woes are sorted and work has resumed after almost 2 months of agonising delays and holdups. Wiring loose ends are being tied up ( literally!) and the aircon is being put in. The compressor that came with the engine is weak and will have to be replaced. The condensing unit and the drier have been put in. The auxiliary fan, piping etc is to follow.

Have also managed to select the interior. You could have also opted for a GM daewoo racer speed pulser - it screws onto the fitting and has 3 wires for the hall sensor while still running the cable

That is specialist advice indeed and there no way would ever have known that! The speedo is working fine. In its present state ( no seats yet!) have driven the car short distances and upto bout 40mph. Accuracy of this will check using a GPS.

Thankyou so much. I know have been a bit "relaxed" with posts lately, largely due to the pace being slow, but work HAS resumed and it will quicken after the holidays. Meanwhile the aircon is all done and the car is at the initial drive stage and a host of tweaks that need to be done have surfaced!

This shot shows (sort of!) the aircon system being pressure / vacuum tested prior to being gas charged. Since then it has become functional and chills the cabin despite the zillion openings around the firewall at present!

Thankyou. This is "standard operating procedure" at this stage of a resto' . As it is a LOT of effort has gone into the paint finish, not too mention the 80k it cost......and it's still not blemish free......
Considering the chain of events, the final coat was applied a bit prematurely so am trying extra hard to avoid any scratches etc due to a careless mech dropping a spanner or a wrench
