old jags were mostly about looks because the AA was very efficient in UK, the germans followed the notion of 've mek a vehikul to run evun in du midst of aafrika' - hence it will even run with minimum requirement. e.g. the 1995 E300D that I have has the old vacuum engine shutoff - its 1995 for crying out loud.

I once made a anti theft device for it - it was a vacuum tee with a switching tap - just flip the tap and all vacuum is rerouted back to the shut off valve - you can then do whatever you want, that engine wont start unless you know how mercedes vacuum system work.

I drove a W210 E300D a couple of years ago and to be honest it was a damn sight quicker than the 280SEL ( W126) I was able to do a direct comparison and also looked up the performance figures. The 0 to 60mph was 8 seconds!

A look at the specs brings up some strange results:

W126........280SEL - 182 hp.....177 lb•ft.......1,670 kg...........10 sec
W210........E300D - 134 hp.......155 lb•ft.......1,715 kg..........10 sec

Information obtained from Wikipedia. Both cars are surprisingly close in their 0-100 times despite the diesel being the heavier car developing less power and lesser torque. Is there something wrong in the information on Wikipedia?

I don't have anything to contribute to this thread apart from the excellent work going on.

I saw a few pages back that you guys were having problems uploading pictures. I use photobucket.com - you can also any other such free provider or even flickr.

I use photobucket because it relatively easier to use, you create an album, upload pics to that album and copy the IMG tag links, to show those pictures here you just paste the IMG tagged links in your reply and they will load up, in a better resolution that what PW gives you and without all the non-sense that happens when upload to PW. If you run into any problems just give me a message!

i checked some other websites, the info seems to be accurate enough..

the close 0-100 times would also be due to the way the 300D delivers its power, unlike 280 which is smooth but has 'sluggish' everything else

the E300 turbodiesel (OM606.962) explodes into its powerband as the snail starts to blow hard into the engine, The transmission compliments it like home made bread to home churned butter. Perfect harmony.

The older 280 is sort of a big heavy mill gathering speed.

To be honest, I take these figs with a pinch of salt bec at the time we actually "drag-raced" and the 300 walked all over the 280, not once but twice! However, it is possible that the 280 was not at its best.

Nevertheless, thank you so much for your input. On the topic of up side down pics, the prob seems to have resolved itself ever since I started using the Pakwheels app ( I think!)

This 300 was the 6 pot later version. I agree on the 280 taking its time to gather its skirts and get a move on. The 320 version in the W140 is a bit better but the V8s are a diff story.........except for the 380

the e300D is only 6 cylinder and the turbodiesel only came in the W210 and the W140 chassis. They are very powerful engines and rev like a petrol engine. The NA engine was used in the W124 and W210

They push some heavy torque

the posting above is measuring the NA 606.910 engine which is 134 hp (like my w124) - but the turbo one mostly found in w210 pushes 243 lb/ft @ approx 1800 rpm which is quite a lot honestly and delivers a peak of 177 hp @ 5000 rpm.

The turbo engine was used in the 210 and 140, E300D and S300D

There are also marine variants of this engine too.

press the accelerator pedal 40%, the car slowly moves ahead from 650 rpm to 1500 rpm, at this point the snail is about ready to blow hard - other cars have already accelerated, at about 1700 rpm the turbo (snail) screams into life and the car starts to gather speed like aircraft ready to leave terra firma (literally the star is a bit elevated too), you catch up with all the cars that accelerated away and leave them in the dust as the transmission smoothly modulates the torque curve to keep the car accelerating.

The only stupid issue this engine has is siezed glow plugs.

The 103 engine (280SE) is a bit lazy but not a dog, the lacking part is the old hydraulic transmission which starts from 2nd gear - to start from first gear - when the car is stopped move the shifter to 2 then back to D, this causes the valve body to engage 1st gear. Boot the pedal and see the car go crazy. Make sure you are pointed straight as there is no traction control on the old cars.

I can't quite recall how the power was delivered when I floored the throttle on the 300, except that it just kept going. With my 280 I recall using first gear on kick down and yes, the old barge would move then. To be fair, although the oil burner WAS quicker but only by a couple of car lengths by the time we took our foots of the throttle. It's the seamless torque of the 300 that impressed along with its pace.

I feel the combo of the older 5 pot in the W116 with the std 4 sp manual and original diff also provided reasonable go but started to run out of breath , so to say, at about 70 mph; not because the power was tapering off but that another gear was needed to bring the rpm down to deliver it to the back wheels. This was certainly NOT an issue with the W210 diesel.

If you are blown away with the old OM606.962 torque - you should feel the torque surge of an E320 CDI or an S400 CDI The S400 CDI literally pins you to the seat at full accelerator.

Speaking of torque even the lowly E220 CDI pushes about 230 lb/ft which is mighty impressive for 2.2 litres.

If and when I ever get to drive one, will see for myself, but am very much a petrol man myself and that too V8s The oddest vehicle I saw recently was a very late model DIESEL Merc SLK. Am sure it goes like stink but the sound just doesn't feel right , to me at least

It's absolutely shameful but I really have nothing meaningful to report on the progress of the Fintail. Being busy with other commitments, a few problems with other cars and general disenchantment with the bumpers, bodywork ripples contributed towards lack of furthering this thread

I also feel that when you get to such a frame of mind during a resto' ( and I always do without fail.......) , its best to leave it for a "while", only in this case it's stretched to over 2 months ! I mentioned then, that will proceed with the interior and therein encountered the first snag. The windscreen rubbers are too perished to risk removing the screens which ideally needs to be done to ensure a proper headlining fit. Given that this removal is not an option a heated debate followed between the poshish walk and the denter at which point I left them to it. Since then I have been informed that they HAVE agreed on a possible solution, so more on that later.

For now am posting a few pics of the old biddy on one of her many test drives using a seat out of a.......to be honest I don't know

First off, the bumpers don't look bad at all in the pictures and I honestly can't see the ripples in the doors. In the other picture, the bikes wallas are too close for comfort. If it was me I would have had kittens by now!
