This bootlid is unbelievably rotten and accident damage has been ver shoddily repaired...just! A rusted piece is being replaced here.

In case anyone following the restoration of this W111 thinks I am mad to attempt it, am uploading the final picture of an older restoration carried out in 2009/ 2010 of a 1972 300SEL 3.5 which was pretty much in the same shape as the Fintail.....

Finally! The bootlid has been resurrected and will live on to open and close many many times! The left rear door was returned by the painters for some more metal to be filled in before making the base for paint could continue. I guess it's important to be patient.

These pictures will show the bootlid has finally been fully repaired as has the rear panel which needed to be contoured making the rear end now look as it was designed to be.

Oh please! Tell me about it! It's like watching the hands of a clock or a kettle boiling water. It's been 2 months already and will b another 10 days or so till the denting is done. As for paint, have considered several options and am getting inclined towards a mid blue metallic with a light grey leather interior but nothing is finsl yet.....as the pictures so far show! Will stick to original Mercedes colours. Any suggestions would be more than welcome!

As the denting goes on, paint process is also picking up pace. The doors have been taken off the car so that base preparation work can go on unhindered prior to painting.

It's going to be a while before it will be fully done, my guess is at least another 6 months. In the meantime, if you would like to view it, the car is being reconditioned in an obscure workshop, one of the labyrinth of workshops behind the PSO petrol pump on the corner of Queen's rd and Lawrence Rd here in Lahore. just ask for where the Akbar brothers workshop is. It's in the one next to Akbar bros! Then ask for Akram, the denter. Or make life simple and call him on 0300 434 9768.

I've been "building" a 67 Impala for what seems like ages now, so I know where you're coming from.

To be honest, I'm personally not a great fan of stock colours, though I can certainly see why a great many people choose to stick to them. Given the amount of chrome and embellishments on this beauty, were I rebuilding it, I'd opt for a dark midnight blue body colour with a powder blue leather interior. Or something dramatic, in two tones. Perhaps black above the "waistline" of the car...with a white bottom half. And do up the interior in black leather. Just my two cents, of course. Mid blue and grey would appear nice, as well. Best of luck!

Am a huge fan of "yank tanks" and have a few. I always found the lights of the '67 in the bumper quite dramatic. As a young boy living in pindi I remember these cars from new. There used to be a lovely pillar less model in canary yellow in the neighborhood and used to just glide past us lesser mortals. What stage of the build process is yours at? Or is that a painful ques?!!

As for choice of color on the fintail, the problem with a dark color is the ripples that show up on the bodywork that is hand finished the way it is here. I however agree with the concept of "drama" and will keep u posted. Right now, the body finally painted is a long way away! Cheers!
