The shaft is in neat condition no doubt. Just slightly skim the housing and slap the seal in, fill it with vaseline or assembly goo before you push the whole shabbang home.

That's the plan....

Another item relating to the gearbox that took me almost a year to get was the gearbox support or foundation as it is called by some pictured below. Though the old one is serviceable but since the gearbox is such a pain to remove I thought I should fit the new foundation at this time.

Thank you all for the words of appreciation. We each in our own way appreciate and wonder at what our other Pakwheelers achieve. I am in awe of your wonderful collection of classics. The Fleetwood, Caprice, Buick Electra, red VW, the Daimler, the 240Z (I think), 560SEC, the 240D of your brother's the soon to finish Fintail the list just goes on and on. WOW!! I am out of breath! Things did not go as per plan today. I took my seal and housing to the nearest "lathe walla" and found that the "ustaad" operating the lathe did not have any decent measuring tools:o. Neither did the one a bit further away in sector F-10. In my book any lathe shop not have decent measuring tools will do a sloppy job. So now the plan is to go down to my preferred shop in Pindi who has done a lot of work for me.

However all was not lost. I spent the day dismantling the "remote control". Heh, that is what the book calls the gear change mechanism. More British quirky humour. Here is the drawing of the box. The bit encased in blue is the remote change and the parts in red are the two seals.

I have already established that the front seal is not holding, the rear seal is good but oil is creeping past the splines. One more area of leakage has been identified as the felt rings (glands) sealing around the gear selector rods. First picture is of the remote change assembly partially dismantled while second and third shows the shows selector rods/sealing detail.

The plan is to remove the plate, extract the felt rings and replace with suitable sized O-rings.

The O rings might prove to sieze the rods - Similar pistons/rods/valves are used in many automatic transmission valve bodies and use teflon rings to seal the oil yet be slippery, O rings will bind the action.

Thanks for the heads up on that issue. I'll have to see what is going on inside the area where the felt is located. Oil could be getting to this location as a result of being splashed up by the spinning action of the gear train or it is very possible that the felt was getting wet from the oil being splashed externally by the output shaft flange. A case of, "Did the chicken come first or the egg". Didn't get to opening that today. Wrestling with the removal of selector fork took longer than expected. PTFE O-rings might not be available. However my lathe man will be able to machine me a set of flat washers similar in size to the felt washers Of course everything will be trial tested and leak tested before committing to the final box up of the gearbox

I went down to my lathe guy in Pindi. Haji Sb. measured the housing bore and seal OD and mumbled it is too tight. He advised to machine the seal housing. An interference fit with the seal of 0.003" (0.07mm). was kept and the seal was then press fitted into the housing. All went like clock work.

Here is a picture of the seal fitted into the housing ... Looking Good...

The rest of the day as spent partially assembling the box. Here is a picture of the seal all fitted up in the box...... I still need to get the cleaning done to my liking and do the final torque up of the bell housing bolts and fold over the tabs of the lock washers.

Here is picture of my "test jig" Don't laugh guys. It gets the job done Gearbox is tilted to keep the oil at the front seal. Haven't done the back seal yet.

Earlier in post# 364, I had doubts of oil leakage from the three gear selector rod felt sealing rings. I took these three rings out and found them worn/hard. When the gears are selected, corresponding rods move back and forth. These felt rings are supposed to wipe off the oil thus preventing it from dribbling out of this location. Felt rings I took out are no longer up to the job of effectively wiping oil from the selector rods. See the picture below to get an idea of the arrangement. I think sticking O-rings will solve the oil leakage problem. Material of the O-rings remains debatable. NBR or PTFE? Trial and error :o ??

O-rings were found in a G-10 auto shop. I was very pleasantly surprised. This enable me to 100% complete the gearbox assembly process. It is ready to go back in the car which will be a bit of a pain.

But before that can be done I have decided to get the drive shaft out for an inspection and lubrication. This will be the first time it has been out of the car EVER. It is very hard to get the shaft out of the car as it is partially enclosed in the chassis. Removal calls for the rear axel to be removed:o. However since the gear box is already out I think I will be able to get it out towards the front of the car.

BTW does anyone know of a proper shop in the Pindi/Isloo area to have the trueness of the drive shaft checked?

The plan to remove the drive shaft has been aborted simply because it is just too long (about 7 feet) to come out of the front of the car and I am in no mood to remove the back axle. All the lubrication and servicing will have to be done in situ :S

Only one person in Sultan ka khoo who is known to align and work on driveshafts. 3rd shop on left when you turn right from glass factory chowk. He is good. have got some difficult work done from him and he managed well.

Wah subhan allah. I just noticed this thread and have only read a couple of pages till now, but i just had to comment when i saw your drawing for the thermostat and how you had it manufactured. I have no doubt i will be compelled to again and again as i read on. A man fully devoted to this wondrous beauty willing to use every little inch of ability the fates have graced him with over the years.

Thank you Saqib Sb. for this very, very valuable piece of information. Even though this morning I made a half hearted attempt to take out the drive shaft and gave up thinking that there was not much point in taking it out if all I wanted to do was greasing and cleaning. But now that you have made me aware of a guy who is good with drive shafts, I am thinking I'll visit him and check him out.

If this lead pans out, I'll work out a way to get the shaft out and have him put it on the machine to check trueness. The reason for this is to investigate the cause of a slight vibration in the car around 50mph and beyond. The vibration is not bad but annoying. I tested the car with the back wheels raised with and then without the drive shaft connected. Car is smooth without the drive shaft so i am thinking the cause is aft of the gear box. I remember as a kid when driving about with dad at the wheel, it used to have the same vibration then too. I am hoping it is not in the diff/half shafts.

I have already checked the universal joints at both ends with no play at all. Also while the back of the car was on stands I started the car and put it in gear to see if the shaft was visibly wobbling. Looked OK to me. I mean I have seen drive shafts on Bedford trucks running out of true by 2-3 inches :).

It is indeed very amusing to read this being called a "remote control". What were they thinking? So what is the alternative called? a "direct control"? And how does that work? Have an open gearbox, stick one's finger in the gears and change gears "directly" as one drives along? Really!!

Read through this thread and you will come across other quirky stuff about this car.

I have been reading and was aware about most of the things, but this one cracked me up hahaha

My father had Jaguars and occasionally discusses them hence the "affiliation". Though the only one I sat in (till I was 8?:/) was a XJ Series III Vanden Plas with the 5.3 V12, all the others were before I was even born - but I still get to hear stories about them.

coming back to the remote control, I, now have reason to believe that the British did / do this on purpose - they have good sense of humour
