its as if "indicator technology" has gone a full circle.... I mean now look at the no. of cars that have repeaters in door mirrors!! If memory serves me right, a friend of my late father had a car, I think it was a Triumph Mayflower or some such, angular ugly thing, which had these semaphores. This was pindi in the early sixties and this type of turning indicator was seen every now and then.

In Europe today cars with just semaphores are not legal. They must have additional conventional blinking type indicators. Luckily no such laws here in Pakistan so the car retains its originality. However, I think I'll have stick my arm out of the window in addition to the semaphores just to make sure that the other road users know I am about to make a turn.

Another quaint thing about this car is the way the headlight dips. The way the headlight dipped was of two types. First type was on the cars for the home market (UK) and the second was for the export market. The Export market car's headlight had conventional dipping like today's car but the home market cars were weird in that when the headlight was dipped, the driver's side headlight turn off and the passenger's side light dips. Mine is the home market version since grandfather bought it in UK. The way the passenger side lights dips is quaint too. The enire reflector assembly physically moves up or down via a solenoid and plunger setup. If you don't believe me here is a scan from the user's manual. Why this is so beats me.

I wonder how often you will be told that only one light is dipping! An excellent example of British eccentricity showing up in car design!

What are you doing about the tyres replacement?

There is more quaintness (madness) about this vehicle in the way the fuel cap opens.

This car is fitted with a "Monza" fuel cap.

Here we go boys and girls, its time for your history lesson. Back in 1922 in a city called Monza located in the North of Milan, Italy, the Milan Automobile Club financed a race circuit. This circuit still exists today and is the venue for the Italian Grand Prix. One notable thing about this track is the number of long straight sections allowing race cars to go flat out. Being a fast race track pit stops had to be very short and subsequently the time it took to refuel the cars too had to be quick. This brings us to the Monza Fuel cap. The Monza fuel cap is a quick open/close cap. Basically the cap can be fipped open with a press of a button and pressed shut. Takes about a second to open/close. Of course all the Pakistani fuel pump attendants are stumped and they try to unscrew it.

Fitting a Monza fuel cap on a car that can barely get out of its own way is more British humor.

Dad was told many times. I suppose I'll be forced to use full lights due to this and blind the on coming traffic. But that is not a problem because 99% of Pakistani drivers don't know that their cars have a light dip feature so I will be in good company.

Since I had not checked out the brakes I was not too confidant in taking the car out on public roads.

Brakes on this car are "borderline quaint". They are rod operated. That?s pretty much like how the rear brakes of a motorcycle work. There no hydraulics, boosters, discs or pads. Very basic and dead reliable. It is impossible to have a brake fail with this car associated with leaked brake fluid etc. Only bad thing about these type of brakes is that the stopping distances are LONG.

I opened up all four brake drums, cleaned out the dust/rust. I applied my 1000 deg C nickel based grease on the cams, rollers and pins of the brakes operating mechanisms. Light emery application on the contact surfaces the brake shoes to take off the glaze. Inspection of the shoes showed that there was much life still left in the shoes. I fitted back the drums and we are good to go.

First I will do a photo shoot and then will be going to the silencer guru and silence that noisy exhaust.

Sorry, I missed answering your question about the tires. This car has tube type tires of size 5.5-18. This means both tubes and tires were needed. The original equipment is Dunlop Fort 90. This tire is no longer manufactured in any part of the world. However other brands do make 5.5-18 tires and tubes and these are fairly easy find. Unfortunately, not in Pakistan. I have a brand new set of 5 tires and tubes on hand which I sourced from the UK. It was a real headache to release them from the customs. I really don't know why the customs are particularly difficult with tires. Probably they think I am going to do a business of some kind ... I don't know.

Ease of opening and closing a fuel cap may well have been part of the "grace" section of the "grace, space, pace" slogan which probably hadn't been coined in 1948 (?) but you never know!
Good luck with the lights as you drive
interesting to read that the brakes are cable. My concern is the capacity to keep up with braking distances of modern traffic. Even old cars with drum brakes all round seem to struggle. You'll have to be extra careful but the problem is a call to make an emergency stop doesn't come with much notice........
Atleast you'll have new tires to grip when the brakes are applied......the custom bods have NO idea of the "blunder" they have made in allowing import of such a classified item

Well we (the Jag and I) are back from the silencer man. BTW I think in MHO Sajid knows his stuff. His assistant Ali is THE MAN.

These guys have a shop in G-8/4. It is the corner shop at the intersection of Jhelum Road and Street 11. The entire exhaust system was remanufactured from the exhaust manifold flange downstream. The missing flexible piece immediately after the said flange was installed after being absent since 1976 or there abouts. Here are the pictures of the exhaust job. The car is a different animal altogether now - very silent by comparison.

And finally these are the pictures of the cat out in sunshine after 28 years of lurking in dark garages. Hope you like them.

Paint on the wings looks OK in the pics but if you see the close up you will notice the problems.

In 1971 I was 10 years old and we were living in Pindi at the time.... Never saw this white car. However, did see a rusty black one that later became silver after its "restoration".
