Salams! As some of you may already have checked my original review thread on the all new Altis 1.6 MT/SR, posted here in “Member Rides” section, as:
https://www.pakwheels.com/forums/members-member-rides/174077-my-black-beauty-altis-2011-1-6-mt-sr
I now have the pleasure to post part II of my review, as promised in original thread above, and as requested by some of you there.
I am posting details here on basis of my Fuel consumption/ RPM/ 6.th Gear deployment experience yesterday, with the ride out for a 3 tours drive, Burhan-Kamra G.T road tour/retour, Burhan-Islamabad M5, and Islamabad-Wah Cantt M5 via Brahma-Bahtar interchange.
I deliberately included the GT road venture from Burhan-Kamra, as to give a mixed review on the fuel efficiency of the Altis MT/SR on both Motorway driving as well as on our good old G.T road.
I would suggest checking my original thread mentioned above for the rest of details on the Altis MT/SR, 1.6.
Kindly keep following things in mind before checking further below:
RPM readings:
ALL RPM readings are with 6.th Forward Gear deployed. Pictures posted of different RPM values at different speed are in no chronological order of the different distances covered, yet in order of RPM/ speedometer values, as I took the snaps from my digi cam during the rides, whenever I felt comfortable to do so and was was missing a front seat companion to do the trouble for me. Hence, the reason why I sadly could not go beyond 145km/hour, it’s humbly not easy to use a full sized auto-focus digicam safely with a hand on the steering and cruising at above 140-150 kms/hour, so higher RPM values for the next time around, Inshallah.
GASOLINE filing:
The filling of the tank every time filled, was a filled-to-the-throat manner, in which I had the tank filled, cap closed, car reversed for a semi-hard brake, as to make volume for more gasoline, forwarded again to the filling point with another semi-hard brake, stopped and “shaken” with the hands on the trunk, and then finally re-filled to the neck. I regret more clearer pics of this filling manner, I somehow couldn’t quite manage the flash settings on my camera, yet this is the way it was done, regardless of, if the petrol in the tank is visible from my pics or not, there was absolutely no “space” for even a “point” more of gasoline each time.
3 different gasoline stations were used, TOTAL, PSO, SHELL, though I've only curse to offer our very own "PSO", but more on that later, I feel the name should have been established as POS instead, kindly read through entire review, before reaching any conclusions.
CARRY LOAD:
Passengers onboard were 3, adults 2 myself included, 1 child . Trunk load, empty, apart from a Subwoofer, a top cover and course, the spare, tools, etc.
Alright, to the job.
The 1.st journey was a G.T road Burhan-Kamra tour, stretching some 46.9kms back and forth, AC was constantly ON, both ways.
It started like this:
TOTAL filling-station, Burhan (Suggested and approved):

BURHAN RETURN:

BURHAN-KAMRA mileage, 46.9 kms:

BURHAN Refill:

TOTAL fuel refilled, trip 1: 46.9 KMS, AC ON, BURHAN-KAMRA, fuel refill: 2.89 Ltrs! :

I told you, forget all about the CD70's, this is the performance of Pakistan's top selling make in full sized sedans, the all new ALTIS 1.6 MT/SR, 2011, taking in 2.89 Ltrs of Gasoline, 3 passengers, AC constant ON, giving the fuel efficiency of, well, let me say, better calculate it yourself, ha ha ha!
But that's not all folks, let me be back with even MORE stunning performances, as well as sucking POS, oh sorry I mean PSO pump station fraud after next drive.
Will be back soon with trip 2 and 3, we're still just in the tails of the CD-70, ha ha ha! Keep watching.
PART II - Burhan - Islamabad:
Ok, guyz, moving on to part II.
The drive was as comfortable as usual, and I tried to squeeze the Altis a bit farther than before, though had to stop short of some 150kms an hour, reason being accompanying family.
Here are the details, yet kindly do not draw any conclusions till my posting of Part III, I could have omitted this part of the affair, yet bound by a conscience of being totally objective in everything I've ever put into writ - be it on this forum or any other - I'm laying forth a judgement for you, so plz check whether if it was the Altis or the POS, sorry, PSO pump that played havoc with my calculations, judge for yourself, I still have a bigger surprise ready for you in part III, so better reserve your final impressions, lolz! Yet do post your "diagnostics, still, will be greatly appreciated. OK on to the details now.
The tank had been filled up to the throat again from Burhan, as per previously mentioned modus operandi, and the trip meter "zeroed" in for the ISB venture:

Some RPM readings during the journey, 6th forward deployed:

And Islamabad Toll plaza:

Sadly, I couldn't find petrol whilst U-turning the GT road for fuel by ISB More, I did my best to get pure Motorway fuel efficiency, but the only petrol pump that I managed coming across here was a PSO one, unfortunately out of supply! Hence onwards to next PSO, can't exactly remember the sector, but it was close to the G-9-4 entry from Islamabad Highway.
And this is the dilemma before part III:
The petrol pump, another guy being looted before me:

My trip meter, 62.1 kms:

And the Fuel, 6.11 ltrs!!!!!!???

I was surprised at this quantity of fuel being refilled, in fact, it was like the meter of this particular filling pump stopped just coincidentally at 6.11 ltrs, kind of, could easily have gone beyond 10 ltrs, ha ha ha!
I told the guyz straight away, your meters have been tampered with and do not display actual amount being filled, yet they just shrugged their shoulders and kind of giving me worried stares, when I took out the digicam to exposure the readings there, lolz!
I just can't believe this difference. I do agree that I put the car up against more lethal use of my foot pedal, yet still it was just a short outbreak up to 145kms/Hour for perhaps 15 seconds total, and then back again to 100-110 kms/hour, AC turned ON, all the way, from Burhan. But, if you remember, my AC was turned ON all the way to Kamra and back to Burhan as well, so this couldn't be the issue.
Average speed was a bit raised on the Motorway, course, than when compared to the Kamra route, yet still, I just can't believe a DOUBLING nearly of the fuel intake, must have been something about this particular PSO filling station, that I'd hereby advise you all to avert to the best of your ability, lest you're moving with an empty gallon in hand and happen to be standing just in front of this particular POS, sorry again, I mean PSO!
I could believe max upto 5 ltrs refill for this journey, and that's absolute the MAX I mean. The 6.11 ltrs refill was just some un-digestable stuff to me, that I had to test it out once again on my way back, this time from Islamabad to Wah Cantt. On to Part III, more of surprises coming up, yet for the better, we still need to get down on that CD 70, lolz! Keep watching, gentlemen, this is no City IDSI 1240CC fuel efficiency report, but a 1.6 ltrs, larger sized sedan being reviewed!
Part III - Islamabad - Wah, trailing the CD-70, lolz!:
The car had been refilled as seen above, from the said PSO filling station. I had then gone to F-10 before my return, so a couple of kms of local Islamabad drive included, with one instance of "idle" running of the engine for some 15 minutes with AC turned ON, whilst having a couple of scoops of Ice cream!
Rest of the journey back was with a star-filled lagoon through the SR and fresh breeze, NO AC turned on!
The mileage on return from Islamabad, showing 66kms:

And the fuel refill at Shell, POF, (same modus operandi):

And the fuel, a stunning display !!!

66Kms @ 3.60 ltrs, giving an aggregate fuel efficiency milage of well about 19kms/ltrs, when bearing in mind, that the guy who filled up at Shell, POF, was woken up by me at around 2.am in the morning or so, and gladly spilled a couple of "points" gasoline on the car and the ground, sleepy and not expecting such a fast refill, when I told him : "full kar do", lolz! His only request at this hour of the night was : "Sir, I've asked you before as well, could you kindly find me some other job, ha ha ha! !
I trust 3.4 or 3.5 ltrs of gasoline would have been sufficient for a refill, to make the aggregate fuel efficiency hit a factor a full 19 kms/ltr! And this is with the ODO still at roughly 1100kms, so you could guess I've better expectations after 2K mileage and further breaking in of the new engine.
I believe this explains the erroneous refill figure of Part II at PSO, Islamabad. I agree, the AC was turned to off during this last journey from Islamabad, but then the AC was turned ON during the Part 1 Burhan-Kamra drive with almost similar mileage, at least much better than the figure at post-PSO refill! The turning off of the AC does for sure have an effect here, yet should not be more than 10-12% discrepancy, whereas the above PSO refill is well about 40-50% in discrepancy, so I believe the difference went straight into some wrong pockets, sadly!
Anyhow, the beauty was rewarded today, and quite deserving of this as you'd agree with me, with following "sweets" for all it's blackish charm inside out, lolz!:

Conclusion ::
All other features have been in-depth discussed/ highlighted in my introductory review : https://www.pakwheels.com/forums/members-member-rides/174077-my-black-beauty-altis-2011-1-6-mt-sr, so no need to repeat again. The suspension is typically Toyota, and the 6.th forward gear is for better mileage and quieter drive. I observed well about 200 revs decrease when shifting from traditional 5.th to 6.th forward and a considerable dampening of engine noise, which, however, is already considerably dampened in contrast to past 1.6 model by Indus, the out-dated by now Corolla SE-Saloon.
The reduction of displacement from 1800cc to 1600cc has been favorable with the addition of the 6.th forward gear and new "dual VVTI" engine, with respect to better mileage in comparison to the 1.8 ltrs. version, yet the car at an output of 122 Hp's is still pretty fast in acceleration and way faster/lighter than the 1.3 ltr, course, yet proportionately much faster than the mere increase in displacement of 300cc's from 1.3 ltrs to 1.6 ltrs, the gross output in Hp's being at about 50% increase in comparison!!!
The steering wheel is just silk'n smooth, even better than you may have felt in an IDSI, Honda.
The fuel efficiency report was missing in my initial review and has been submitted here now for your joy.
Let it be said, I've had Corolla's as well as Honda's before. My last two cars out were a City IDSI 2006 and Corollla SE Saloon, 2003. In addition to this, I also occasionally drive a Chevy as second car for an artificially conceived idea of "fuel control", local drive, but darn heck, this Altis went quite beyond my expectations in performance, beating the "fuel saver" Chevy big time, lolz!
My suggestions to Altis 2011 new owners/ prospective owners, as of my early experience of today, this is a feature packed vehicle with quite a stunning performance as you may have observed above, and you'll never regret it's acquisition. Priced at 18.25 for this fully loaded MT/SR, freight included, it's no doubts a value-for-money deal as per present market trends, and perhaps the best local option out there in the vacuum of a new version Honda Civic VTI Oriel, so enjoy it and drive it with the care a family car deserves and keep the RPM anywhere between 2200-2800 to obtain max fuel efficiency as above and, course, best safety for yourself and your accompanying family/friends. I've observed that the best peace of mind, driving any car, is obtained well at max 90-100kms/hour, even better at 80, regardless of, whether it's the Motorway or General Trunk road, whichever.
We generally complain of fuel efficiency factors, but most of the times, the actual culprit is our own driving profile. And if you still give heck in all this, well, take your Altis out for a good raced up venture, dial the speedometer all the way out, or as fast as you can make it go with control, it will take any kind of beating with valor, don't worry. I'm just a family man and would drive a Honda or any of the more exclusive of goodies around, the same way as described above.
Finally, and not intending any Altis/Oriel war here at all, let it be said, I did initially have the upcoming Civic 2012 in mind, for a replacement with the Altis later, on launch of the Oriel next year or, but that was before the delivery of the Altis, lolz! Nothing can be said with full certainty, but as it appears today, I'm definitely more inclined towards keeping it for now and wait till the next Altis is around the corner, if this thing could just keep being improved upon like this, no doubts Indus made the "Rolla" rock n' roll for this time around!!!
Hope you enjoyed,
