At the Chengdu Auto Forum, SAIC’s vice president, Mr. Xiao Guo Pu, announced that the Roewe 550 plug-in sedan will launch in 2012. In a talk entitled ‘going greener and greener’ Mr Xiao announced SAIC’s plans for a greener line up of cars, of which the plug-in 550 was a major feature.

Mr. Xiao claimed that SAIC are setting the standard for the electric car industry, and are working faster on the industrialization of hybrid and plug-in electric vehicles and also carrying out research on hydrogen fuel cells. Later this year we will see the launch of the Roewe 750 hybrid, which is also at work at the World Expo where SAIC delivered 1100 hybrid vehicles which are being used as service cars.

In 2012 Roewe will have launched the 550 plug-in electric sedan and will also have another pure electric vehicle that they will launch. The 1100 cars delivered to the World Expo are a mixture of hybrid, pure electric and fuel cell vehicles, all of which are performing extremely well according to Mr. Xiao, with 97% being used on a daily basis and many of them working beyond the scope of their original limitations.

well , take a look at the above tables , special regime ( duty on fixed engine capacity ) is the only apparently possible way to bring this car over here.

as on Normal regime , the 1800 cc category is restricted to USED cars only , and NEW cars are restricted to 1600cc only.

so FIXED engine capacity is the only apparently possible way.

21000 USD or 1806000 would only be the duty +100k more for freight and clearance.

so the formula would roughly be.

CAR PRICE + 19 ,00,000

for which ever version you choose.

we can play a gimmick here and declare the car as used by getting it registered abroad for a month or so , canceling it , and sending it here ,under the NORMAL REGIME as most people do , but that too would not make a difference too big , hardly 100k. so that is it. almost 111% duty would still have to be paid even if we play a gimmick.

Recently media reported that Roewe 550 will get a facelift by 2012. The facelift Roewe 550 will be available in about 8 trim levels, including an electric version and DCT dual-clutch device transmission. The facelift Roewe 550 will continue to use naturally aspirated and 1.8L & 1.8T turbocharged engine. The five-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission gearbox will be replaced by DCT dual-clutch gearbox. All DCT transmission models will be equipped with steering wheel paddles shifter. In addition to traditional gasoline-powered system, the facelift Roewe 550 version will also introduce an electric vehicle.

The face-lifted Roewe 350 debuted at the Shanghai Auto Show and is now officially listed on the Chinese auto market. Price starts at 124.800 yuan and ends at 189.800 yuan. Engines: 1.8 and 1.8 turbo. What’s new: bumpers, grille, mirrors, alloys, fog lights, and some improvements inside.

The next Roewe 550 is nearly here judging by the below spy shot, furthermore the Chinese media are confirming that the 550 will be carrying 1.8L and 1.8T engines combined with a dual clutch gearbox.

So who supplied the new gearbox? Is it from SAIC’s partner at VW via Borgwarner? Is it self developed? Sort of. The gearbox has been self developed by SAIC and GM as a low cost unit. Furthermore the 550 will come with stop/start technology as standard on mid to high range models as a means to save on juice and get some hybrid vehicles into the market. Interestingly a 1.5VCT model will be introduced as well which has electric motors attached to it to drive the wheels (we think) but we will update you on this interesting car at a later date.
