Sir, -12db/oct is a 2nd order crossover, not first, -6db is and with that you will have to cut them even higer. If you cut your PS at 120hz @ -12db, the output at Fs region (60hz-ish) will be very low to cause any damage or anything like that to PS. But that causes you to cut your sub at a higher frequency which as per you say, makes it more musical and dominating over the midbass, the correct description would be that the sub becomes easily localised at that point. 80hz and below, sub bass is not localisable.
Thats the advantage that dedicated DSPs have that you can select higher order or steeper slopes and cut your mids and subs lower, thus making the soundstage solid in front. Bypass all the crossovers from your amp (set it to full or off whichever is available) and then use your HU's crossover till you get your hands on something with more tuning options
