This is a Rolls-Royce Phantom, which I found at the customs, near the Old Port of Cannes. It was an impressive and heavy piece of machinery and it is most certainly designed for royalties and multimillionaires needing all available luxury at any price.
Driving a VW Golf '97 myself - although it's a GL - I thought of the ownership of a Rolls-Royce, especially at the Côte d'Azur, as 'against all odds'...
But when I began investigating the background of this exclusive car, I found some surprising facts. In July 1998 the BMW Group in Munich, Germany, took over responsibility for the Rolls-Royce motor car marque. So during a couple of years groups of employees commuted to Southern England, where a new factory was built near Goodwood in West Sussex.
And in the beginning of 2003 - after four years of intense development - the 2,5 ton heavy and almost 6m (20ft) long new Rolls-Royce Phantom was launched. By a German company! In England!
Who would have bet on that?
