Running Car with Fuel Warning

Everybody knows that you should never run your car on low fuel cause the fuel pump can get damaged by sucking in air. Now i wanted to know that as soon as the low fuel light comes on does the reserve come on or is it like older cars where fuel light would come on. Car would stall and then start again (now on reserve) and then reserve would be on . So is it ok to run your car after fuel light comes on (range showed 40 Km with avg 11km/l) and refill later after reserve turns on or immediately get fuel

It does not harm the pump if you drive little bit around 20 kms after reserve light turn ON.

I normally refill when Range is close to zero i.e. 9-10 kms and sometimes refill after getting the range zero. Autostop fuel on my car gets me around 45-46 litres of fuel. Total tank capacity of Corolla is around 55L so it is safe to refuel till the very end of range i.e. When the range shows the last 8-9 kms.

So i guess im in the safe. Petrol pump is a little far from my house so i was wondering can i make 2 trips to the local market and then refuel in the morning cause too tired to go now to the pump right now .
