Security situation on KKH and gilgit shandur road

Dear pakwheelers,

I was planning to visit GB with my family (wife+ son) on 01.09.2023 after 4 years gap but this year I am going through KKH as a lot of incidents of snatching and firing on cars have been heard on naran-babusar-chilas road, already a professor from Punjab lost his life yesterday 20.08.2023.

Please any frequent traveler preferably local guy confirm "present situation"whether KKH and gilgit to shandur road is safe in day time as I have to take my family there.

Highly unfortunate. The victim who lost his life was a student not so long ago at the institute that I work at. He was from Vihari. The car he was traveling on was shot at during an attempted robbery on Chillas Babusar road. Reportedly this incident occured during the night time at around 9:30 pm.
The road is safe to travel during the day time though.

call NHMP help line - The news over TV says that time frames are allocated after sunset to move vehicles in convoys for either directions. There are news reports of militants once again regrouping in those locations with ill intentions.

This is really sad, I am also planning to go with wife in December to Hunza. Is it recommended or not?

Salam.
You won't be taking the Babusar route in Dec since it gets closed due to snow in mid to late oct.
You will be taking the KKH which has quite a lot of traffic. Also, try to take a break in Besham and then start off early morning the next day for Gilgit/Hunza. You will be easily able to traverse Chillas during the day time. Besham has a lot of Hotels and accomodation options and most people traveling from Punjab to GB via KKH usually stop there for the night.

Wow. Didn't think it was this bad. My family and I travelled to northern areas for the first time last week.

Went to Naran and we're deciding to go to either gilgit or Kashmir through the N15.

Thankfully, some tourists who were travelling through these areas advised us it is safer to go back down the N15 towards Kashmir if we wanted to.

Due to commitments, we ended up travelling back to o Lahore.

I also made sure our travelling was done during daytime and that we would always reach our destination before sundown.

We would like to visit kahsmir one day, not sure when we will. Any advisories on what roads and areas are developed/safe to visit?
