Seeking Advice on First Car Purchase: Honda City Exi vs Hatchback

I am planning to purchase my first car and have a budget of around 10-11 lac. Personally, I’ve always admired the Honda City Exi (2001-2003 model) with a 1300cc engine and have been a fan of this model for the past 4-5 years.

However, a friend of mine is insisting that I opt for a hatchback (such as a Cultus, Alto, or Santro), as he believes first-time car owners are more prone to minor accidents or scrapes. His reasoning is that a smaller car would be easier to handle.

Despite his concerns, I am still inclined to buy the Honda City Exi, provided I find one in good condition. I would greatly appreciate your honest advice on whether I should go for the Honda City Exi (2001-2003) or consider a Cultus (2008-2010).

Better buy alto or cultus !!

His reasoning is right for a first time buyer.
That city can have expensive maintenance for you... While cultus has cheap maintenance. You don't want to have an expensive maint car as your first car, unless you are willing(and have money) to spend on it.

You have money = city
Dont have money = cultus

Walk away from Alto even if you are getting it for free. Cant comment about santro, but it's parts might be difficult to get.

Additionally, if I drive 800 km in one month, what would be the maintenance cost (excluding fuel) for the City EXi? Also, after how many kilometers would it require maintenance?

I would say go for the Honda City that you like. Your friend has a valid point about smaller cars being easier to handle, the City is also a very popular and reliable model. Your driving skills will improve over time. As a new driver you may feel more confident in a smaller car at first, but the City is still very manageable sized.
