I recently purchased a '96 model (2006 imported) 5 door Prado KZJ90, which also is my first SUV/ 4x4. The car has only 96k kms on the odometer (genuine) which i believe is very low for a car of this age. The last owner (also the first owner of the car in Pakistan) changed the tires of the car only 2 times between 2006 and 2019. Current tires (Dunlop AT3) are very good in shape and tread depth as they are not much driven but the manufacturing dates on these date back to 2012. As I don't want to risk anybody's life, the tires need to be changed at the earliest.

After doing a bit of quick research for selecting the new shoes for the vehicle, I am now confused between selecting the A/T (All Terrain) and the H/T (Highway Terrain) options. I live in Karachi and the vehicle will be used mostly inside the city, but I am not sure if going for H/T Tires will limit the vehicle to paved surfaces and significantly reduce the capabilities of driving through rocky or sandy surfaces.

Need expert advice on selecting the best suited tires. The tire size to be purchased is 265/70R16, and the maximum budget per tire is between 22-25k pkr.

I would go for ATs, karachi and surrounding are not highway like. ATs would serve well

The ATs for sure are good for both on road and off road driving, but when we talk about H/T tires I believe that they should have some off-roading capabilities as they are designed to fit SUVs/ Trucks/ cross overs. In case the H/Ts are only for paved road condition, using my corolla over prado will be a better option.

Installed H/T tires after discussion with some of the experts in the field. The dealer from whom we purchase tires for all our family cars also recommended the same. The tires were changed in mid of November '19 and since then I have felt major improvements in the drive of the car, comparing with the previous AT tires.

The H/T tires are not only for use on roads (nor they turn your SUV into a car). What I understood as a layman in terms of SUV/Truck tires is as following:

H/T - 80% On Road & 20% off road use
A/T - 50% On Road & 50% Off road use
M/T - 10% On Road & 90% Off road use

I think you made the right choice. I have been using Dunlop Grandtrek PT since 2018 - which I believe are also highway tires, have been serving me quite well. I have driven the vehicle multiple times over loose dirt, sand and gravel that we frequently encounter on the outskirts of Karachi and in majority of our travelling to northern areas and haven't had any issue at all.

The HT are more silent and fuel efficient on road where 80% of our driving will be and also offer somewhat off road capability.

P.S.: What's the name of your dealer and where is he located? I am looking to change my honda civics tires probably in a month and would visit him if he's an honest dealer.

I will recommend the dealer as he is knowledgeable and honest. Once you reach the shop, ask for Nasr Bhai (+92 300 8258253).

JazakAllah. This road has been my daily commute for many years and the current Kumho Ecsta tires on my civic were also bought from a corner shop in this same lane. Will visit him when business resumes.
