dear experts

can we use shell helix ultra 5w-40 fully synthetic , in air cooled,brand new 3 kva generator?
running on gas?

You can but it isn't reasonable to use in it because they usually need SG SH grade oils or fleet oils. Havoline 20W50 or Delo Gold Ultra 15W40 will be good enough. Or if you are specifically interested in Shell then go for Shell Rimula R3 X 15W40.

what about diesel generator?
i use mobil delvac 1 5W-40 fully syntheticc in brand new diesel 13kva generator

it owners manual says viscosities to be used are 5W-40,10W-40, 15W-40 but no 20W-50 doesnt mention api rating
and its the newer tech high rpm variants.

It would be an overkill. You would be fine with even SG grade cheap oil like havoline or shell HX3.

Also if you are trying to extend drain interval by using synthetic oil DO NOT do that. These generators do not have oil filter and with the small quantity of oil (0.5-0.7 litre) if you extend the interval you would be killing your engine very soon.

For Diesel Genset of 10 or higher KVA, 15W-40 of API CI-4 of any good company to be used.

for your air cooled gensets, use 10W-40 mineral oil and change at the recommended interval. Synthetic will be overkill and waste of money and you cannot extend the OCI since there is no oil filter
