Cultus 06 model. While driving on highway I saw some smoke coming out of the right side of the panel below steering where the headlight and indicator switches stick is attached. I was driving in day and using dipper frequently. I got it checked with electrician who opened the box and while ni obvious burnt wire of panel was noticed he asked me to change one headlight bulb which he said that was getting burnt inside and due to its load the wire the smoke was coming out of the panel. So after changing switch I drove a little with headlight high beam on and again I saw smoke coming out of the same side. The electrician now said that we may need to add relays to headlights connections to reduce the load. I am not sure if his claim is still relevant. Kindly advise what to do. It looks pretty dangerous to drive with smoke being seen.
Install oem rating bulbs. If you install bulbs that requires more power (watt) the same will happen. As it draws more amps from the wires cause them to heat up. Installing relay is just like covering up the weakness, although it does work.
Install relays if oem spec bulbs are not installed. Get it done as early as possible. Eventually the complete unit (under steering wheel) will burn out. burnt unit is not repairble and you will have to replace it.
Thanks for reply. I never installed any high power bulbs. The new bulb replaced by electrician is H4 Halogen. Do you still think the problem is with the headlights? Because I have been using these bulbs for the last four years and this issue just appeared now
Your system is weak to support them now. Cheapest solution will be installing a relay.
Thanks I'll get relay installed and see if the problem goes. One more question I am also noticing that high beam headlights are automatically turning on which turn off my moving stick up down. Is it also related to the same issue? seems like heated up circuit is malfunctioning.
Yes, seems like heat already damaged the switch.
Yes car is parked at the moment and headlights are getting on automatically with smoke coming out again. What is the name of this complete unit?
Stalk Headlights switch and turn signal. You can just call it headlights switch.
H4 is type of bulb, its available in 55/60 watt (original equipment) or 100/110 watt (offroad)
People love to install “sau waat ka bulb” because of “more light” which burns out the switch and melts the headlights themselves.
Exactly brother. I noticed that the stock bulb was already in installed since the other bulb was 55/60watts while the one put as replacement is 90/100watts.
Update. Just got is rechecked by another electrician who has changed the problematic headlight switch (stick) only and relay has been installed. Let's see how it goes
Insha ALLAH wouldn't come again. If it does just install oem rated bulbs.
I wish it works, BUT changing stick only won't solve the problem. Every electrician will sell his own chooran.
Dont use 90/100 watt bulbs. If you keep on using them you will end up with melted headlights even after installing relays.
Use the original 55/60 bulbs and install relay setup if you are getting voltage drop at the bulbs. And clean the headlight reflector with ammonia and distilled water to shine them up.
