Effective reference does play an important role in our corrupt society but my experience is that, if you are competent enough, you'll somehow land a good job. Your response to every question in an interview is really crucial. I still remember my very first job interview. There were 25 vacancies and 75 people out of thousands of applicants were selected for interview based on NTS test results. I was 38th out of 75.

I was asked, your field is very specific and you are highly qualified in that field. Why would you like to join us for a general cadre post. My answer was pathetic. I replied, Sir you know, these days you can't get a job without any reference. I applied for falan falan post and I was on merit but wasn't selected due to lack of a good reference. This led me to broaden my target fields/areas for job hunting. And here I am interviewing for this post due to this reason. I was rejected . I kept cursing them that they didn't hire me due to my lack of having good reference. I now know that I should have answered something like yes sir, that's true. My field is very specific and that's what makes me an ideal candidate for this job. I can integrate my expertise in my specific field to this job to get even better results etc etc. I was asked other questions and I now know my answers were really bad.

Moreover, there are common interview questions that have quite reasonable weight-age as per my experience for example:

Q: Tell us your weakness
Bad Ans: I lack communication skills etc etc. (Giving them your actual weakness)
Good Ans: I have a bad habit of having a very focused approach. Once assigned a task, I can only sit back when it's accomplished successfully. I cannot think of anything else etc. (Portraying a strength as your weakness)

Q: Where do you see yourself after 5 years from now?
Bad Ans: At your place
Good Ans: A successful team leader with 100% job success rate etc etc

Q: Why you left/want to leave your previous job
Bad Ans: I had a fight with my manager over some issue
Good Ans: I found my previous job is no more challenging for me

Q: Why do you want to join us
Bad Ans: Handsome salary and good incentives
Good Ans: I expect that I'll face new challenges in this job that will help broaden my vision and polish/improve my skills
