Well, MoS2 either formulated in a Liqui Moly engine oil or as a separate additive goes both ways. I've used the additive as well as the company's more premium CERATEC in daily runners. So I have a first hand experience of both additivesemphasized text in two separate platforms and may be able to impress you guys with some "Inglaishh"
1. Both were added separately (to Mobil 1 Full Synthetic) 10,000 KM apart in my 8th Gen Civic.
2. Both were added separately (to Zic Synthetic) 20,000 KM apart in a 2010 Vitz 1.0
In the 8th Gen nothing even slightly noticeable surfaced. Same idling, fuel economy, heat generation etc etc. So in that case I was totally pissed at myself for falling for the marketing hype.
In the second case, Vitz, there was "very small" improvement in reduction of engine knocking for which that model is notorious. Fuel economy improved noticeably. Idling improved at an incremental value.
Okay, so my understanding is, that these additives are not going to play a huge role in newer tech engines or those that have low miles. Not even in vehicles that have been taken care of with respect to routine maintenance. Older tech engines or those above 2,00,000 Kms which might not have received timely and correct oil changes could be another story.
Don't get me wrong. I'm a big sucker when it comes to performance plugs, filters and additives. I've had my share of spending like a rich Arab (which I'm remotely not) over these things but they really don't make a "noticeable difference". At the end of the day you just keep consoling yourself with the imaginary performance gains that really are not there.
Better to keep things simple but trusty. Believe me, whether it's the Germans, Japs or your local Hakeem, they all try to convince you that you need special pills or multivitamins to serve you the benefits of having and sustaining rock hard erections and immense pleasure (while all that is already there). And yes, I've been there, done that too.
