These things have fantastic engines and trannys with a delphi diesel control system, They have so much torque that it pulls like a cargo train gaining speed.

The sad part is that baboo, ullu, nanna, bawla, idiot ustaad mechanics dont have proper tools to repair these and neither do they know how to repair them, thats why "FAIL" technology comes to be heard.

e.g. nearly all of them have broken off glow plugs and to drill out requires a special extraction tool set that has a few guiding bores, drill bits, taps, and pullers.

OR

you remove the head, which will require the injector puller slide hammer (if you dont have it and try to pull out a CDI injector you will break it off ($$$ <-- heart attack) and then would require special sockets to undo the head itself, the timing gearcase tools and stay pieces are a separate story.

The above is the reason why our mechanics with their love for swaps are using Toyota 1KD and toyota 1KZ diesels in these, some have even put toyota sedan petrol engines in them.

Its quite a sad case

speaking of their common rail problems, I had the diagnosis equipment of the delphi HPCR diesel control system, and have recalibrated some unmolested ones back to 100% performance.

They are very robust and simplified compared to the bosch and siemens units of the germans. They can go out of sync if part of the CAN-BUS system goes out of sync due to some fault, usual culprit that I saw was cut/twist of the wiring behind the aftermarket stereo unit that causes the cabin CANBUS network to go faulty. Can bus is like an advanced muxer with less no. of wires doing many jobs at the same time.

The problems in engine hunting, limp mode etc was always due to some mechanic using oversized tools or incorrect techniques to remove assys or even wiring plugs, The fuel filtration system on these cars are 3 stage like MB, one in tank strainer, one pre filter and one main filter before it goes into the high pressure pump. You are supposed to drain the fuel sediment filter at regular intervals.

Another fault I saw was pressure washing a hot engine, the high pressure iron body pump is located upfront the engine and gets very hot while in operation - it has very minute clearances that enable it to generate 27000 psi of fuel pressure in the common rail. If you spray cold water on it when its hot - it will damage itself and you will lose pressure (I dont think that is a design fault - because this engine is mounted in a road going vehicle)

Thanks so we have reached a point that Rexton is a good vehicle with a heart from Mercedes Benz and if taken care well then it is a comfortable SUV with a very low price tag as compared to Prado or other japanese SUVs, I love if I could buy one with Diesel Engine but I have a petrol though it is very good and running fine. 100% true. I work at an authorized Ssangyong dealership and when we try to get the glow plugs out, we warm the engine for 20 minutes, use some kind of special drilling tool, whilst loosening it slowly, if it doesn't come out on 1st try, warm the engine more and repeat. After 2-3 tries, we use some strong lubricant, tell the owner to drive for a few days and when they return, it finally comes out :L
