can you explain why doesnt mufflers cause a performance gain? because I think unrestricted exhaust flow would definitly improve the top end. Coupled with straight exhaust piping a muffler would definitly cause a little gain.

You just answered your own question. You see Muffler is only single part of the whole exhaust system. In order to see gains provided that your car has restricted exhaust and the replacement is making it flow better and the engine is capable of flowing to the extra capacity. And that there is more air coming into the combustion chambers. Then yes it should show a slight gain, but might not be where you expect it to be, might be over a broader power range and very rarely noticable by the seat of your pants.
