Stoppage of coolant flow through car heater unit

Usual mechanics suggest to stop flow of coolant through heater core of cars in Summer by closing the inlet and outlet pipes. Is it ok? comments any valuable comments from Pakwheelers?

Whats the purpose of doing it?. Heat will not come to the cabin area unless if you turn the heat knob. So, when they close the inlet and outlet pipes to the heater core do they bypass it to continue the coolant flow to the radiator?

URR, there is a valve attached to the knob which should stop the hot water to heater, with passage of time its performance drops and hot water keeps circulating in heater.

So when you use air conditioner the cold air passes over the heater and gets warm thus reducing efficiency of AC.

In fact closing the pipes cools the car rapidly. Try it

You can bypass heater core, there is nothing wrong with that (As long as you don't care about cold in winter..

You mean heater core? not heater valve.

I don't think there is any solution to fix heater core. Heater cores are just like mini radiators. You may fix it and stop leaks for sometime but there is no permanent solution. If it leaks again after a month or 2... you are going to be spending more money on labour than the parts. Why not just buy new part or even used and get it done first time.. instead of fixing it?

Thanks All Pakwheelerrs for valuable comments. I also agree with all of u. I must add one more advantage of heater core that incase of car overheating we may circulate full water through it while blower is set on at high speed. It will assist radiator to take heat out quickly. We cannot convince our illeterate mechanics.

I meant that valve which alows or disallows water circulation in heater core. It becomes leaky over time and heater works all the time depending on how much the valve is leaking.
