Strange sound from backside

AoA,
When I reverse the car (Cultus) in speed, there comes a strange sound like "Thuk" from lower backside. I'm unable to understand why this happens. Can anyone please help?

LOL @ the topic heading :POn a more serious note, could it be that the exhaust rubbers are loose which is making the sound or the suspension.Does it happen all the time, at a certain speed or what? and is it a regular sound or just once when you reverse?

No solutions yet. But something has changed. Now the strange sound comes in low gear (first & reverse) whenever the brakes are applied. Went to a mechanic but he was also unable to determine its cause. Any suggestions?

Check the bolts underneath the transmission. My vitz had a similar problem, the noise used to come when the car moved from stationary position. A bolt was loose, had it tightened.

Exactly, noise comes when the car is moved from stationary position. Now I hope I'll get it fixed. Thanks

check engine mounts (called foundations). Sometimes they're cracked but you cant see it unless you get it up on a ramp or get underneath it.

1) pull the handbrake so car wont move off anywhere while testing.
2) put the car in 1st gear and release clutch (half) in a sudden fashion. Note the sound.
3) then put the car in reverse and do same, note the sound.

If doing so reproduces the sound (while handbrake is firmly applied) then its either engine foundations (esp. front and rear ones on engine) or the exhaust is touching somewhere.

Rule these out first.
