time for the ATF replacement procedure--
1st step is to raise the vehicle on jackstands and it should be level, no need to raise if you have a working pit - remove the plastic under shield, it is pretty easy to remove, some philip head and 10mm bolts.
2nd is to remove the battery, tray and its support. to get to the filling bolt / plug, there are two more on the rear side of the gearbox but reaching those is much harder and working with those isn't exactly easy.
so removal of battery and its trays makes things a lot easier to work on.
after the 2nd step this is what you see
undo the fill plug using T-50 torx bit
next is to go under the vehicle and start the drain process:
as you can see the drain / level check bolt is a two part assembly.
place a pan underneath, remove the t40 bolt, some oil will drip, it let drip until it stops.
next to remove the drain bolt - we made a special tool:
drain bolt again showing the 17mm hex - we didn't have a 17mm hex in our arsenal.
once you remove the drain bolt, oil will be flowing out so keep your hands safe and let it drain.
we drained about 2.75 liters and then about another 200ml using some air pressure. so thats about 2.95 liters total.
now its time to clean the drain and level check bolt assy, replace orings if needed, and install the drain / level check bolt back but not the small t40 torx bolt.
clean everything up and start filling from the top till it starts tricking from the level check bolt.
thats when you install the t40 back
keep the filling etc connected, install battery and start up the vehicle, let it reach optimum temperature, shift thru gears 8-10 seconds each and shift back into P.
remove the t40 and start adding more ATF until it drips again
once it starts to drip, install the t40 bolt back when its a slow trickle.
add another 200ml for good measure and install the t-50 fill plug back.
clean any oil drippings
get the vehicle on road and test.
Remember this is for the Vitara with M16 engine with AISIN TF73SC 6sp auto transmission, it takes AW-1 ATF - we used about 3.5 liters of oil of which we used about 300 ml to flush, just pour in 300 from the top, let it sit and drain out. This transmission cannot be flushed without removal because it doesn't have atf lines going to the radiator or a cooler, instead it has a built in cooler which is connected to the coolant system
