I just came back from a visit to Kalam.

Road conditions:

Mardan to Mingora : Excellent.
Mingora to Khawza Khela : Good with some bad patches.
KK to Madyan : Bad with some patches of the old metaled road.
Madyan to Bahrain : Bad and almost Off road conditions.
Bahrain to Kalam : Off-Road conditions.

I went to Swat from 18 June till 22 June.
Route as follows:

Rwp to Mingora by Daewoo : Rs.770 (Ticket cost)

Mingora to Miandam : Rent a car (Toyota Corolla 2004) Rs. 1200.

Night Stay at Miandam : Evergreen Hotel (Rs. 1400 per night) Reasonable hotel. Good food.

Miandam to Kalam : Rent a car at Rs. 2000 per day with driver Corolla XLi 2007.
Distance 52 kms, Time 3 hours.

Kalam
2 nights stay...(Hotel Marina Inn.. Rs. 3000 per night)

There are many hotels in Kalam and you can choose where to stay depending on your requirements and budget.

Kalam to Mahodand Lake : 38 kms (Jeep takes 2 hours to reach ) ( Rent a jeep at Rs. 3500 - 4500 per trip)

I had the rent a car with me for the return journey from Kalam to Mingora.

Night stay in Mingora ( Park International Hotel near Fizaghat at Rs 1500 per night)

Returned to Rwp on 22 June by Daewoo.
