In its first month of sales in Europe, Tesla Model 3 outpaces all other rivals and becomes the best-selling electric car in the region during February 2019.
The iconic and best-selling electric vehicle of Tesla has kept its top tradition, this time outside the United States and wraps up with the maximum number of sales in Europe. In a market that is rich in competition in the presence of electric vehicles from Nissan, Kona, and Renault, Tesla somehow finds its way through to the top rank. Apart from winning the competition in its EV category, Tesla also toppled the sales of local auto giants including Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. In the month of February 2019, a whopping number of 3665 units of Tesla Model 3 were sold across Europe, according to the latest data released from JATO Dynamics. The American-based Tesla crossed the 3000-mark, quite comfortably leaving behind Renault Zoe as the runners-up with 2884 vehicles. Tesla Model 3 has got a significant lead over its rivals in EVs segment which includes Nissan Leaf, BMW i3 and Kona EV.
According to Felipe Munoz who is an analyst of JATO, the growth in sales of Tesla Model 3 is certainly exceptional and unusual, even outside of the United States. The credit mainly goes to the remarkable performance of the Model 3 that has captured the auto market sales in a short period of time. He further said that these results are unusual for a new car that has just hit the roads of Europe. Apart from being the best-selling electric vehicle, Model 3 also wins the race among the best-selling mid-sized saloon in a competition which had big names likes BMW 3 Series. Just a reminder that Tesla is ramping up to become the world’s top-selling brand; as its Model 3 was the best-selling EV in 2018. The German auto-giants will have to formulate a solid strategy to encounter the sales of their US-based competitor in Europe.
Another aspect to notice here is, the volume of sales of Model 3 comprises a large proportion of private registrations. It also sets a new trend in the auto sector which usually had most of the volume sales made by the business sector for new cars in previous times. This is nothing less than shaking the European auto sector with great ease. The auto-giants based in Europe are clearly struggling to bring something similar to the seamless electric technology offered by Tesla. It would be interesting to see how quickly these premium car makers will react to the arrival of the Model 3 in Europe. Overall, Volkswagen Golf was the best-selling car in Europe with 31,769 registrations. Renault Clio was the runners-up with 26,062 registrations followed by Volkswagen Polo in the third place.
Electric vehicles have a little share of 1.9% in the European market but the month of February 2019 has increased the number of registrations by 92%. On the other hand, Norway held the top spot among all other countries with the highest share (49.14%) of plug-in electric vehicles in new passenger car sales during 2018. It includes the plug-in hybrids and light vehicles as well, excluding commercial vehicles only. However, the leader of the top 3 auto markets by total electric vehicles sales in 2018 is China followed by the United States and Norway. China beats the US market by almost three times with 1,053,000 EV sales. The US market saw 361,000 sales during the same year followed by Norway with 73,000 units.
