Fellow Pakwheelers,
I think the XJ deserves a dedicated thread on Pakwheels. After owning the car for over a year now, i think its about time i'd share my experience with the community about my experience of owning an old American Jeep in Pakistan.
First of all, XJs are very reliable and extremely simple as compared to present day cars. With the right tools, they are quite easy to work on. A weekend warrior can take quite a bit apart and put it back in. Being a weekend worrior myself, the car is yet to visit a garage for anywork as for me working on it is like a hobby.
The jeep i own is a 1996 model imported in 1996 by Engro Pakistan. It changed a couple of owners since 2004 and i eventually bought it from a very nice guy in ISB.
The 1996 model was the worst year with OBDII so the parts are a bit of a puzzle. Since North America is the easiest source of parts, well, having it in RHD complicates things...lol. Anyways 1996 XJs are built with bits from i think models manufactured throughout the 1990s.
The AMC 242 straight 6 is an absolute treat to drive. When it purrs, it does leave you with a smile one can never experienced driving say an 80 series LC . I understand that the 70/80 series are all different animal but i'd pick a reliable cherokee anyday just because of the sheer fun.
Pre 1996 model were OBD I . they had slightly different ECU. Before that the JEEP used RENIX ECUs in earliar non HO models. Later models come with coil on plug ignition system.
The 4.0 has mostly remained the same. its the same engine we find out 1990s wrangler. Full iron block & head SOHC is torquey low maintenance work horse capable to taking serious abuse. AW15 transmission is also fairly reliable japanese transmisson. perhaps the only Jap bit you find on these cars.
Yes it has its problems, yes they are at first hard to diagnose but most problems are electrical but fairly easy to fix if u have the spares. These tiny bits of spares, the light weight stuff can be ordered from Amazon & they are cheaper than a brand new toyota part from that era.
I pretty much have 2 of everything now even the stuff that i don't need right now but can go bad and ofc the right tools to replace them on the go!
The purpose of this thread is to unite all XJ/TJ/Grand Cherokee Owners in Pakistan to share part leads and discuss common issues. I think we don't do that, pretty soon we will run out of these jeeps. I think whatever jeeps left now deserve owners who can take care of them. !!
