The Curious case of HOBC and Euro5 Petrol

So on 12 August, I went to Total pump for refill. Was totally surprised to see that they were selling excelium HOBC at 110 to a litre in Karachi, whereas normal petrol was at 104. Actual rates of excellium were above 150/-. This was intriguing, so I decided to visit PSO to see what price they are offering. Now the story took another twist, their price was 120/- but they were selling Euro5 compliant High Octane, so I got the Euro5 one. Either way 110 for High Octane is a good deal, not sure for how long it will last. Cheers!

They were probably getting rid of their Hi Octane stock to make room for Euro 5 compliant fuel.

What is the "curious case" in this?

PSO was selling their Altron X at rs.110/l too before they introduced Euro 5 97RON fuel. Total are also about launch their Euro 5 compliant fuel, perhaps they are trying to get rid of their old stocks too. Keep in mind old Euro 2 high octane may also have dangerously high levels of MMT in fuel.

A higher octane fuel is not always a good thing when it is not recommended by the vehicle manufacturer, especially when it is Euro2. In such case, regular 92RON fuel would be better for the vehicle engine health as it would have lower levels of MMT.
