I wonder which, if any, EVs will make it to our shores.
Future of EVs is looking increasingly bleak in Pakistan with each passing day. Local assemblers are constantly lobbying against them. EV policy is effectively dead. Customs etc are charging whatever they feel like on imports.
Even rumors of ‘free registration’ etc are turning out to be false. Excise were initially charging 4-5 lakh for E-Tron registration, now they increased it to 8-9 lakh.

Yesterday I saw two E-Trons at a fuel pump in Johar Town Lahore, I went for a service and one E-Tron was plugged in for charging and other was waiting in line. When I left after an hour or more that vehicle was still plugged in... Biggest drawback of EV is the long recharge times. That pump was charging Rs. 2 per Unit.

One more thing that I have noticed about E-Trons is that out of 20 you spot maybe one would be registered and others carry the E-Tron plates.

Few months ago I saw one getting parked in neighbors house and few guys took pictures and it drove off. I asked the house help and they said saab sent them and they just wanted to park in drive way and take pictures to post on Facebook.

New style of marketing I guess where they show that vehicles are being bought and used. While they are actually just display units. Similarly some units were given to people with large social circle to drive around at popular places in Lahore.

Yes.. even the one which crashed somewhere in Islamabad was also carrying ETRON plate. It looks like its done to convince the public about their presence.

Those are level 2 chargers and I believe 50kwH charging capacity. If the battery is 70kwh and fully depleted, it will take over an hour obviously. There is no fast DC chargers in PK. Etron is capable of that and can get fully charged in 30 minutes or less but with a 150kwh capacity DC super chargers. I think there is none in pakistan publically available.

Yeah, otherwise this vehicle is a hard sell in Pakistan. A family member was looking for a car after selling A5 and when I asked if he has considered E-Tron, he was like bhai it doesnt seem value for money and would be a waste in current situation.

Don't think there are any mainstream ev's other than Chinese ev's that can be within a Pakistani middle/upper-middle budget to justify enough infrastructure spending by fuel pumps. The MG guy, for now, seems to be running a scam

2021 is going to be very interesting for the US with 3 very attractive mainstream products i.e. VW ID.4, Ford Mach-E, Nissan Ariya going on sale.

I noticed the same thing. I was told by Audi people that the Excise and Taxation department is confused about how much to tax EVs. Islamabad has started registering them , charging about 8-9 lakh. Not sure about Punjab yet.

They should incentivize the purchase of EV ! Like rest of the world, you get tax credits, special parkings ( at least in Scandinavian countries) reduced or no tolls. yahan even registration is punitive.

The facebook marketing is quite smart, and whats more hilarious is that a lot of fresh immigrants from Pakisfan landing in USA immediately go buy a used high end luxury car and post pictures on facebook and instagram for likes and followings

Its so cartoonishly funny to see them poop their pants when they find that repairing their 10k usd mercedes S class is going to cost 10k

Then they get even more shocked when they try to sell it and find out no one is offering more than scrap money. (Under 1k)

Forget incentives, firstly you have illiterate paan chewing corrupt pieces of shit as top brass in customs

We also know that anyone who gets “bhartee” in customs does so to earn “ooper ki kamai”

So forget anything from that side unless you can blackmail them with something strong and sinister like proving their children dna dont match etc...

Coming to excise and taxation, they are in same boat and the collective of them dont know how to apply taxation on them for road use.

Coming to govt, all the bigwigs of any govt are “installed” without consulting their qualification (if any) on powerful seats. We also know professional consultancy does not exist on any level of federal or provincial govt, so getting something done for such is a futile exercise.

We also know that Pakistan excise and customs are stuck in pre 1947 raj (the code that they left here) too bad electric cars are a fresh invent, it might take another 70 years for such to materialize.

I think the max our govt was capable of doing was to remove all import duties, give toll and tax concessions, and incentives charging infrastructure development. Can't make sense of why big 3 were so against it, none of the cars would have intruded into their market much with the price tags even if one removes all import and registration kharcha, I'm pretty sure people wouldn't have bought small range Chinese EV's in numbers enough to disrupt them. Having an ev import incentive would instead help these stupids themselves once they have proper ev's in their global lineups.

That is also true, civil service was designed by our overlords to rule us not serve us. They hire provincial idiots on quota with one size fits all policy, one year in foreign service two years in agriculture and 3 years as police officer. With no pre requisite qualification or skill set for particular job. No KPIs to measure their performance against.

We are stuck in a vicious circle, people who have power to change are ACTUALLY the beneficiaries of the system. Status quo serves them best, otherwise how can a BA pass rural idiot can enjoy luxurious life at tax payers expense. Green number plate vehicles, houses and an army of servants and drivers. Even the cutlery at their residences is provided by tax payers.
