So I went to a farm house near Bahria town today from DHA via Lahore Ring Road, and in the way I saw 5 Audi e-tron. I see atleast one everytime I go out in DHA. With a 17 million price tag and no charging infrastructure, it sure is selling well.

TBH overnight charge on home wall chargers can cover your city use. Charging infra is needed along motorways but those driving an e-tron have a second car in the garage to cover the intercity travel so it's fine for them.

You see Audi e-tron ads listed under hybrid category. Pathetic!

**Kia boss to electrify brand with relaunch **

In his first interview with Western media, Kia's boss has revealed the company will be relaunching with a focus on EVs.

Kia CEO Ho-Sung Song is preparing to relaunch the company as it begins rolling out a range of electrified cars.

In an interview with Automotive News, Mr Song revealed the Korean car company would align itself with a younger customer base as it transitions away from traditional combustion powertrains.

It's expected Kia will announce its future product plans in more detail, as well as unveiling a brand-new logo.

Known internally as 'Plan S' – with S meaning 'shift' – the move is designed to pitch the Kia brand as more upmarket, while establishing itself as a leader in the growing electric vehicles segment.

"We want to be more dynamic, stylish and inventive," Mr Song said of the company's future direction.

"We are shifting our business into the future."

Last month Kia announced it would launch seven new electric models by 2027, with the first to be unveiled early next year along with a new logo.

While the new Kia logo was first unearthed in December 2019, details of the brand's relaunch won't be made public until January 2021.

Lets take an example of a few people I knew who lived in apartments in DHA karachi

They rented an empty shop to park their cars and some were abt half a km away.

If they buy an electric car and leave it for charging in that little shutter shop, and there was a power failure causing a no charge. Should they phone their boss and say,

“Raat mein gaari charge nahi howi, der se aaonga” pata hi nahi chala

Should they buy bijli car or keep running baraff car?

Hahaha bro you wanna be even more specific and mention what floor of the apartment building they live on and whether their nani lives with them too? Or whether their boss is going through a divorce etc.

Bro there is no gospel. Nobody is preaching that EVs are the solution to all problems or theyre for everyone (like your friend in the apartment). Not even saying they’re superior your ICE vehicle.
To some people they make sense and theyre already buying them. In the future they may make sense to even more people. Thats all.

EVs will be initially more successful in cities like Lahore, where majority of people live in independent houses. There have been no scheduled power outages in Lahore at night for past few years except local breakdown due to thunderstorm. Even if in a rare instance, the power goes out for all night, then you can just take Uber to work, which can be available at your doorstep in 5 minutes, no need to be late.

Personally, I have solar system installed at home and also work from home, so car be charged in daytime. For me, petrol shortage would be more of an occasional issue than electricity shortage.

I shall try to draw a parallel here with luxury SUVs. Although I know some of you shall disagree but I think it is valid for our society.

When I was a school student I used to see wealthy and influential people buying Pajero and Land Cruiser and kept these vehicles as a status symbol. At that time there was a 'Pajaaro' culture combined with 'Kalashinkov' culture in Punjab. These vehicles were favorites of politicians, landlords and other affluent class people.

Believe me, it took me a while to understand that SUVs of that time were made primarily for off - roading purposes. But most of the people were unaware of that. To them, the prime feature of these vehicles was their power show.

Today, I want to know how many people buying EV in Pakistan are environmentally aware, like to live and breathe in a pollution free atmosphere, care about emissions levels, are aware of the most common industrial and automotive pollutants etc?

I am almost sure that today EV is taking over the 'Pajaaro' of 80s and 90s.

I sure hope it becomes a status symbol among the typical wealthy. Any kind of EV adoption is good for environment. Remember the old days when "LCD wala phone" was a status symbol? Now everyone has one. I hope it happens to EVs in Pakistan as well. I am sick and tired of pollution.

China will play a big role in cheap EVs, so its entirely possible Pakistani automotive market is dominated by Chinese brands in future.
